Devon''s status as ''The English Riviera'' is well earned and is testimony to the popularity of this holiday destination, which attracts thousands of visitors every year who come to enjoy its special charms.

The county is blessed with two coastlines which are dotted with picturesque fishing ports and mile after mile of clean sandy beaches. The interior consists of a striking contrast of dramatic moorland that includes the Dartmoor National Park and a patchwork of green leafy lanes that criss-cross the region.

Dartmoor actually has two national parks as well as five areas of outstanding natural beauty, a UNESCO World Heritage site, Geopark and Biosphere Reserve. It’s also famous as the location for Conan Doyle’s ‘Hound of the Baskervilles’. It has 368 square miles of windswept, dramatic and uncrowded moors to enjoy!

The English Riviera; Torquay, Paignton and Brixham, are a magnet for those looking for a seaside holiday with lots of attractions and activities for all ages. It also has a rich maritime history, plenty of sporting events and water sports activities.

South Devon is characterised by gentle rolling hills and a lovely coastline, offering easy walks, country pubs and great restaurants, while the northern coast has superb surfing beaches. Exmoor in north Devon is perfect for moorland walks, mountain biking and has wonderful natural beauty.

    The local town of Okehampton, often referred to as the gateway to Dartmoor, has a good range of shops and local amenities. There are plenty of walks in Dartmoor for all ages and abilities, to enjoy this stunning and dramatic area, as well as some pretty village pubs and tea rooms. Towards the coast there are many fine beaches and coves including Saunton, Woolacombe and Westward Ho!. A trip to Lundy Island can be arranged from Bideford pier.
    There are numerous places of interest close by including the RHS gardens at Rosemoor, Dartington Crystal and the historic fishing village of Clovelly. Visit Castle Drogo (NT), the last castle to be built in England. For those wanting to travel a bit further, the A30 is a great link into North Cornwall and its many attractions, including the Eden Project and Padstow. There is golf at Okehampton and Ashbury, or you can hire a bike and cycle the Tarka Trail at Great Torrington. Shop and pub 600 yards.

    The wooded cliffs at Bolt Tail form a backdrop to this sandy cove on what is renowned as one of the most beautiful stretches of coastline in the South Hams. These holiday cottages are set within 100 yards of the safe sandy beach – an unrivalled position for enjoying the seaside, but also perfect for fishing, sailing and water-skiing (with a dinghy-launching slip 200 yards away, and facilities for larger boats at nearby Salcombe). The cottages are in the centre of this charming seaside village, with its pretty thatched cottages, inns, restaurants and small shop within a short walk. The South Devon Coastal Footpath winds along the cliffs and through Hope Cove between Salcombe and Thurlestone, with opportunities for magnificent walking amongst glorious coastal scenery.
    The maritime attractions continue slightly further afield. Salcombe, 4 miles away, is one of the most prestigious sailing centres in the country. It offers extensive sandy beaches, too, and a wide choice of fascinating shops, boutiques and restaurants in its quaintly winding narrow streets. The estuary here is a kaleidoscope of brightly coloured craft of all kinds at their moorings – a paradise for sailing enthusiasts. Thurlestone, 2 miles to the west, can be reached either by car or via the coastal path. It boasts yet more expanses of golden sands, a regular feature of this lovely coastline. But, in addition, it has a superb cliff-top links golf course, edged by sandy coves, tennis courts and picturesque streets of thatched cottages overlooking the bay. Kingsbridge, the ‘capital’ of the South Hams, has a good choice of interesting shops, a museum and a sports centre with squash, badminton and bowling. Boating and diving trips can be arranged in the Salcombe Estuary, and boats are available for hire. Within easy driving distance are the historic cities of Plymouth and Exeter and Kitley Caves. The wide open spaces and breathtaking scenery of the Dartmoor National Park are less than an hour by car, and there are many National Trust properties, stately homes and interesting gardens within a short drive. Anchor Cottages are set in a little terrace in the village. They have been designed to offer ‘upside-down’ accommodation, with first floor living rooms.
