Totnes

Totnes has a unique laid back atmosphere, lovely river side setting and a rich historical past.

Set in the rolling red-earthed hills of South Devon, the market town of Totnes offers a fascinating history and is often referred to as one of Devon''s gems. The town is full of colour and character with individual, quirky shops, cafes and restaurants that sell local produce and a twice weekly market on Fridays and Saturdays. At the picturesque quay you can take ferry trips down the River Dart to Dartmouth.

Visitors to Totnes have a choice of two castles; Berry Pomeroy Castle is rumoured to be the most haunted castle in England while Totnes Castle is well worth the climb up to the castle keep, where you''ll be rewarded with sweeping views of the town across to the River Dart.

For a day out with a difference, the Sharpham Vineyard and Cheese Dairy is highly recommended, and China Blue is perfect for a rainy day, where you can create and paint your own pottery and shop for unique gifts and home wares.

There’s plenty going on from your Totnes cottage; you''ll find a wide range of things to see and do nearby, but if history and visitor attractions aren''t your thing, grab your walking boots and head off into the Dartmoor countryside or enjoy a taste of the fresh sea air; you''ll be sure to find a welcoming watering hole along the way to enjoy a spot of lunch and a pint of the local ale.

    Ref: W44280

Nestling in countryside, just on the outskirts of the vibrant, riverside town of Dartmouth, Lower Collaton is a hidden gem of an old homestead farm, dating back to the Domesday Book. Here there are 3 converted barns which offer super holiday accommodation, lying just across the courtyard from the owners’ ancient farmhouse. The owners keep a handful of pedigree Jacob and Shetland sheep, which graze the surrounding meadows. Chickens roam freely in the pretty courtyard to the front of the barns. The Stables is a detached stone barn, with delightful living accommodation for 4 people, with high vaulted ceilings, exposed trusses and a woodburner in the living room. The Old Granary is tucked away in the corner of the grassy courtyard and is a little cosy nest for 2 people. Compact, detached and cosy, it was imaginatively designed by the owners’ daughter. The Byre is where the milking parlour used to be, and in the living room the names of the cows are displayed on the original manger name plaques. This property, which sleeps 4 people, has a living room with spectacular vaulted ceilings and the original scissor beams. The area is surrounded by rolling hills in the tranquil valley of the River Gara, midway between Totnes, Dartmouth and Kingsbridge making it a perfect location for exploring this beautiful region of South Devon. From the moors of Dartmoor to the shores of the South Devon coast, there is much to do in the region. Spend a day shopping and eating in the historic naval town of Dartmouth, or explore the many beaches and coves along the beautiful coastline.
