Seaton

Seaton is a long established seaside resort at the mouth of the River Axe in East Devon. The town faces Lyme Bay and is situated on the Jurassic Coast, a 96 mile stretch of coastline designated a World Heritage Site because of the rocks that record 185 million years of geology.

Apart from fossil hunting, visitors to Seaton will enjoy all kinds of water sports, including windsurfing, swimming and sailing along the mile long pebble and grey sand beach. Walkers can explore towards Beer in the west or Lyme Regis to the east, following the South West Coastal Path, which runs along the seafront.

All the shops you need for a self-catering holiday can be found in the town and the Axe Valley Heritage Museum in the town hall has many displays, including a collection of old local photographs, Victorian costumes and natural history display.

Inland from Seaton, a tramway runs along the old railway line up the Axe Estuary as far as Colyton. A ride on the electric tram is a must for transport enthusiasts and birdwatchers, as well as anyone who just wants to enjoy the lovely riverside scenery. The Seaton Marshes Nature Reserve is beside the tramway and has paths suitable for wheelchair users so that everyone can enjoy the wildlife at any time of year. There is also a playground for children and a skateboard park.

Close to the sea front are the Jubilee Gardens, where there is plenty of entertainment for all the family with a putting green, bowling green, large children’s playground, tennis courts and the Jubilee Clock Tower. The nearby Cactus House is also worth visiting.

The coastal resort of Seaton lies approximately 1 mile to the south and has a wide pebble beach, a small harbour at the mouth of the River Axe and direct access to the World Heritage Coast and South West Peninsular Coastal Path.
