Dartmouth

The historic town of Dartmouth has a rich naval tradition and is located in a picturesque bay on the banks of the River Dart.

The town has strong connections with the Royal Navy and is famous as the location of Dartmouth Naval College. It’s also been the place where in times past plundering pirates would set out to plunder and the Pilgrim Fathers set out for America.

This characterful town has winding narrow streets, quirky shops, art galleries and delicatessens. By the quayside you''ll be able to watch the brightly coloured boats come and go. Visitors are able to board the ferries that ply the River Dart or climb aboard the Dartmouth Steam Railway.

From your holiday cottage enjoy the beautiful surrounding coast and countryside including Blackpool Sands, a stretch of well-maintained shingle beach offering safe swimming and ample parking. Further along the coast you''ll find Slapton Sands, where a tank stands as a stark reminder of the military history of this place and the ill-fated D-Day training operations during WWII. Now it offers a scenic haven, with a lake and nature reserve behind the beach. You could also pay a visit to Agatha Christie''s holiday home, which she called the ''loveliest place in the world’; Greenway is now a National Trust property with beautiful river views, woodland and walled flower gardens.

    Ref: W44004

Set in a very quiet and rural location, midway between Totnes and Dartmouth, nestling in a secluded valley with beautiful views over green and rolling hills. Lower Tideford Farm is a peaceful little group of 5 holiday cottages on a small South Devon farm (refs W44003, W44004, W44005, W44006 and W44007). Once a working dairy farm with contented cows grazing on 170 acres of lush Devon pasture land. The original, beautiful stone barns set around a central courtyard have now been converted into lovely holiday cottages set down a long private drive and surrounded by fields. The Dartmouth cottage was the original milking parlour, and the kitchen was used for cooling and storing milk. The upper storey of The Salcombe cottage was a threshing barn, some of the machinery, in particular the old cogs and wheels, are still there as original features, and these can be seen in the kitchen. They were powered from outside by a traction engine in days gone by. This is a super location for a holiday, whether you may fancy just relaxing and reading a book or taking in the breathtaking views across the valley or perhaps trying your hand at some of the ball games on offer. With shared grounds of 30 acres, sitting-out areas and garden furniture, a fenced stream and a pond lower down in the valley, Lower Tideford Farm is ideal for families who are looking for a perfect place in which to relax and unwind. Historic Dartmouth is 4 miles away with the spectacular River Dart, the historic towns of Totnes, Kingsbridge and Salcombe, all on your doorstep. Shop 5 miles, pub ½ mile and restaurant 2 miles.

Ground floor: Living/dining room/kitchen area. Open-tread spiral staircase to first floor: 1 double bedroom. Bathroom with shower over bath and toilet.

Electric woodburner in living room included. Electric heaters included. Microwave. Dishwasher. Parking (1 car). No babies or children.

All properties: Electricity and bed linen included. Towel hire. Travel cot and high chair on request. Freeview TV. Electric cooker. Shared laundry room with washing machine, tumble dryer and freezer. Shared 30-acre grounds with sitting-out areas and furniture. No smoking. NB: Stream and pond nearby.

"Devon’s best kept secret... Just inland from some of Devon’s loveliest and most natural beaches lies the village of Tuckenhay set along Bow Creek on the River Dart...."

In a setting of stunning natural beauty, Tuckenhay Mill is the centrepiece of a cluster of country homes and cottages with superb leisure facilities including two indoor and one outdoor pools, making it ideal for a family holiday for all ages.
The Mill which once produced some of the finest paper in the land, nestles in the green and shady Bow Creek, a languid inlet of the River Dart where private yachts have replaced the old tall-masted ships and barges. Around the mill are all the buildings which once went to make up a small bustling village port. These listed buildings have been sympathetically restored and converted to a delightful range of holiday properties to suit larger family parties. Awards have been won for the conversion of buildings and the conservation of the area. With so much to do, many holidaymakers return year after year.

    South Devon awaits you
Tuckenhay is only a 20-minute drive from the superb award-winning beach at Blackpool Sands and about 30 minutes from a surfing beach at Bantham, as well as some of the best natural beaches to be found anywhere in the UK.
There is also extensive access to the coastal footpath for walking and the wilderness that is Dartmoor for walking, climbing and riding.
This is a mecca for ramblers, bird-watchers, swimmers, surfers, horse riders, golfers and those interested in fishing, boating, sailing and windsurfing.
In addition, there are many historic NT houses to visit including Agatha Christies’s Greenway as well as a local vineyard (with award-winning wines) at Sharpham.
Tuckenhay is only 5 miles inland from Dartmouth and 3 from the market town of Totnes. Village shop 3½ miles. Riverside inn and restaurant within walking distance.

    A superb choice of cottages
Each of the cottages has been individually styled to offer comfortable and spacious accommodation. Great care has been taken to retain the feel of the original buildings and extensive use has been made of traditional materials. Most have garden, terrace or patio. Individual cottage details are shown on the following pages.
Many cottages have more than one bathroom and some have an en-suite bathroom to every bedroom. Kitchens are comprehensively equipped: most have dishwashers and all have microwave cookers.
Couples and honeymooners will feel snug and comfortable in the small cottages: Mill Leat, Mill Stream and Mill Spring. Families can spread out in Papermaker’s or Turbine Cottages, while Mill Lodge, Edgecombe Barn and Tuckenhay Mill House will sleep larger parties in comfort. Of course, combinations of cottages can accommodate bigger gatherings of family or friends.

    IN SYMPATHY WITH THE ENVIRONMENT
Tuckenhay Mill has led the way with most of the pools being heated by ground source heat pumps. Awards have been given for energy saving as well as pool design and conversion of buildings. 2008 saw the extension of the 20 acres of stunning natural landscape opening up nearly a mile of footpaths through dells, meadows and woodlands along with a natural waterfall. This is the place to enjoy a personal ‘Spring or Autumn Watch’ with swallows in the log store, buzzards on the adjacent hillside, owls in the woods and ducks and swans down on Bow Creek. Strolls can be taken with the dog and picnics enjoyed on a bench by the river. Children can stroke the goats and even collect eggs for breakfast from the hens (when laying)!

Step back in time at Wood Farm and discover this truly delightful, quintessentially English homestead on a small private estate nestling in a completely rural and tranquil valley. This is a real rural hideaway, yet lies equidistant between the towns of Dartmouth, Totnes and Kingsbridge. The main farmhouse is the owners’ home and dates back to the 16th century; the adjoining barns have been converted into two luxury holiday homes (ref KAAY and KAAZ) overlooking a grassy meadow, an old apple orchard, a meandering natural stream and a pond full of wildlife. Beck Barn and Fern Barn are almost identical in the style of their layout. Renovated to a high standard, this original Devon barn, estimated as being 200 years old, retains its original scissor beam trusses and features. The accommodation is reverse living, with the spacious open-plan living, dining, kitchen areas upstairs and bedrooms downstairs. White plaster walls, rugs on oak floors and contemporary kitchens allow for a warm living area. Luxuriously designed to merge the traditional barn features and rustic timbers with modern living and a wow factor. The underfloor heating is supplied by the state-of-the art ‘ground source heat’, a super effective method of supplying heat from nature itself. The interiors are totally unique and offer a high degree of comfort and style. The beds have crisp, white cotton linen and supersize, fluffy towels are provided too. The old farmyard around which the barns are positioned is quite charming, with old sweet-smelling rose bushes creeping up the stone barn walls and pretty planted areas.
For complete peace and quiet, this is the place to be - there is no light pollution here, and the sky at night is a spectacular sight to see. Surrounded by open countryside and small copses of ancient woodland, wildlife abounds. Down by the river kingfishers can sometimes be seen, whilst at night you can hear owls hooting in the trees and the stream tinkling through the valley. A public footpath runs through the 5-acre grounds, and a short walk over fields leads to the little village of Blackawton, with its 15th-century Norman church and village pub. Blackawton’s claim to fame is being the venue for the national worm charming contest, where people from all around the world gather to practise their art! Kingsbridge is about 7 miles away and has an excellent range of shops, restaurants and local facilities for canoe and paddle board hire. Totnes, at the head of the estuary of the River Dart in Devon, is 8 miles away and has a reputation for an eclectic mixture of shops, restaurants, market and residents focus on artistic talent and ecological living. The ever popular and affluent towns of Dartmouth and Salcombe are 7 and 12 miles away respectively, both with beautiful harbours and estuaries. They are a mecca for yachting and water sports with some excellent shops, markets, restaurants and inns as well as lovely sandy beaches and cliff top walks. Dartmoor National Park, the largest and wildest area of open country in Southern England with its wild ponies and outdoor adventures, is 12 miles away. There are some excellent beaches in the local area including Slapton Sands, dog-friendly all year round, and Blackpool Sands, with its café, about 6 miles away. Shop, gastropub and restaurant ½ mile.
