  • The Bolt

    Salcombe

    Grade

    4
    0
    2
    Ref: SHBOLT

The Bolt is quite possibly the most iconic of Salcombe landmarks and one which, from its position peering down from the cliffs above South Sands, is first seen by sailors entering the Salcombe estuary. Built in the 1950’s as a holiday home for the founder of the Jaguar car company, Sir William Lyons, the property forms the ground floor of a detached house standing in grounds of approximately two acres and with the most impressive views of the estuary and sea beyond. The property is furnished, in part, in ‘retro’ style having changed little since first constructed and has shared parking for two cars. The outside areas are restricted, due to safety factors, to the large paved terrace to the front of the house.

From parking area steps down to entrance to Kitchen: gas hob and electric oven, microwave, original ‘Belling’ warming cupboards and ‘English Rose’ sink units, dishwasher. Pantry: slate floor and shelving, tall fridge/freezer. From Kitchen, double doors to Dining Room: one wall fully glazed with super views and window seats, door to outside. Hallway. Bedroom 1: super king size bed, built in wardrobe, basin, lovely views. Bedroom 2: twin beds, built in wardrobe, basin, lovely views. Bedroom 3: single bed, built in wardrobe, basin. Bathroom: original 1950’s bath, basin, WC. Bedroom 4: king size bed, built in wardrobe, en-suite Shower Room: shower cubicle, basin, WC. Laundry Room: washing machine, tumble dryer. Sitting Room: large comfortable room, glazed on two sides with superb views, window seats, open fire, door to outside. Glazed doors to Snug/second Sitting Room: TV/DVD player. Additional WC adjacent to sitting room. Lobby Space, wardrobe, external door to patio.

Outside: large paved (in places uneven) terrace running the full length of the house with views over the gardens, estuary and out to sea. Outdoor furniture, BBQ.
Parking: shared parking for two cars.
Duvets, pillows, bed linen and towels provided.
    Wifi available.
Gas central heating and hot water.
    No pets allowed.
Due to steep slopes, unprotected drops and an uncovered, empty swimming pool, access to the garden is restricted to the paved terrace to the front of the property only. Use of garden is at own risk.
For this reason, we advise that this property is unsuitable for children under 12 years of age.
    Private flat above house.

Bow Creek, between Dartmouth and Totnes

    Grade

    1
    2
    Ref: FCS

"Devon’s best kept secret... Just inland from some of Devon’s loveliest and most natural beaches lies the village of Tuckenhay set along Bow Creek on the River Dart...."

In a setting of stunning natural beauty, Tuckenhay Mill is the centrepiece of a cluster of country homes and cottages with superb leisure facilities including two indoor and one outdoor pools, making it ideal for a family holiday for all ages.
The Mill which once produced some of the finest paper in the land, nestles in the green and shady Bow Creek, a languid inlet of the River Dart where private yachts have replaced the old tall-masted ships and barges. Around the mill are all the buildings which once went to make up a small bustling village port. These listed buildings have been sympathetically restored and converted to a delightful range of holiday properties to suit larger family parties. Awards have been won for the conversion of buildings and the conservation of the area. With so much to do, many holidaymakers return year after year.

    South Devon awaits you
Tuckenhay is only a 20-minute drive from the superb award-winning beach at Blackpool Sands and about 30 minutes from a surfing beach at Bantham, as well as some of the best natural beaches to be found anywhere in the UK.
There is also extensive access to the coastal footpath for walking and the wilderness that is Dartmoor for walking, climbing and riding.
This is a mecca for ramblers, bird-watchers, swimmers, surfers, horse riders, golfers and those interested in fishing, boating, sailing and windsurfing.
In addition, there are many historic NT houses to visit including Agatha Christies’s Greenway as well as a local vineyard (with award-winning wines) at Sharpham.
Tuckenhay is only 5 miles inland from Dartmouth and 3 from the market town of Totnes. Village shop 3½ miles. Riverside inn and restaurant within walking distance.

    A superb choice of cottages
Each of the cottages has been individually styled to offer comfortable and spacious accommodation. Great care has been taken to retain the feel of the original buildings and extensive use has been made of traditional materials. Most have garden, terrace or patio. Individual cottage details are shown on the following pages.
Many cottages have more than one bathroom and some have an en-suite bathroom to every bedroom. Kitchens are comprehensively equipped: most have dishwashers and all have microwave cookers.
Couples and honeymooners will feel snug and comfortable in the small cottages: Mill Leat, Mill Stream and Mill Spring. Families can spread out in Papermaker’s or Turbine Cottages, while Mill Lodge, Edgecombe Barn and Tuckenhay Mill House will sleep larger parties in comfort. Of course, combinations of cottages can accommodate bigger gatherings of family or friends.

This spacious two-storey property is very similar in layout to 2 Salle Cottage. Spacious sitting-room reached via glazed doors from split-level hall with polished wooden floor. French doors and small flight of steps to paved terrace with valley views. Kitchen/dining room with superb traditional country-style kitchen with farmhouse table and chairs. Separate toilet. Ref: KAAQ

Just half a mile from St Marys Bay, the nearest beach and a 15-minute stroll to Brixham town, Hearthstone East Cottage was built around the 15th century and retains many of the original features, including beams, window seats, an open fire and two staircases, with an east wing and west wing. This semi-detached, thatched holiday property is ideal for families to holiday together, whether its a family summer holiday near the coast or a cosy winter break when the town is much quieter. Brixham is an old fishing port and has numerous seafood restaurants. Take a boat trip over to Torquay and visit the theatre, or explore Living Coasts, where penguins wander freely. Brixham forms the third part of Torbay, the other parts being Torquay and Paignton. The bay is known as the English Riviera because of its unique micro-climate, and Brixham shares this mild climate. South Devon’s two cities are Exeter and Plymouth, both are within easy driving distance, approximately 30 miles, and offer their own tourist attractions, historical buildings and shops. Dartmoor is breathtakingly beautiful, at once romantic, mysterious, wild and eerie. Visit the tourist spots, or experienced walkers and navigators can explore the depths of Dartmoor. See wild Dartmoor ponies, cross ancient stone bridges spanning the clear, bubbling waters of the river Dart and other rivers, and feel the somewhat eerie presence of the Tors, seven rocky hills which preside majestically over the moors. Dartmouth is the neighbouring town to Brixham, situated on and across the mouth of the River Dart. Take the ferry (car and passenger) across to Dartmouth. Whilst waiting for the ferry, look across to Dartmouth at the Britannia Royal Navy College. Located on a hill above the river, it glints in the sunshine, a splendid backdrop for the river estuary, with its many sailing boats, naval boats and pleasure cruisers. Look to the mouth of the river and see two castles, those of Kingswear and Dartmouth, true fairytale castles guarding the mouth, with the rocky waters of the estuary lapping at their feet. Don’t forget to visit Agatha Christie’s home, Greenway, which was for many years her summer residence and now open to the public. As well, there are many National Trust properties to explore. Beach ½ mile. Shop and pub 200 yards.

Visitors enjoy use of a superb leisure complex housing an indoor heated swimming pool and spa with full changing and shower facilities (open 9:00am-7:30pm), a fitness area and games room with table football (coin-operated), pool table, table tennis and toddlers play area. For children, there is a well-equipped adventure play area and an area for ball games, and they will surely enjoy stroking the tame rabbits and goats. Christmas decorations, a real tree and champagne are supplied for Christmas bookings. This is a wonderful walking area, both on the coast and along the nearby Tarka Trail. From the lane, a rough track (not suitable for toddlers or the infirm) leads down to the coastal path from where there are magnificent views across Bideford Bay towards Clovelly and the beaches of Devon’s northern coastline. There is plenty to see and do nearby – The Big Sheep and Milky Way, the new Atlantic Village, and the picture postcard village of Clovelly (6 miles) are just some of the attractions. Bude’s superb sandy beach and resort amenities are within a half hour drive. Golf, fishing and riding are available locally and the Tamar Lakes offer sailing and wind surfing. Nearest pub serving food in Horns Cross, 0.25 miles.
