    The wooded cliffs at Bolt Tail form a backdrop to this sandy cove on what is renowned as one of the most beautiful stretches of coastline in the South Hams. These holiday cottages are set within 100 yards of the safe sandy beach – an unrivalled position for enjoying the seaside, but also perfect for fishing, sailing and water-skiing (with a dinghy-launching slip 200 yards away, and facilities for larger boats at nearby Salcombe). The cottages are in the centre of this charming seaside village, with its pretty thatched cottages, inns, restaurants and small shop within a short walk. The South Devon Coastal Footpath winds along the cliffs and through Hope Cove between Salcombe and Thurlestone, with opportunities for magnificent walking amongst glorious coastal scenery.
    The maritime attractions continue slightly further afield. Salcombe, 4 miles away, is one of the most prestigious sailing centres in the country. It offers extensive sandy beaches, too, and a wide choice of fascinating shops, boutiques and restaurants in its quaintly winding narrow streets. The estuary here is a kaleidoscope of brightly coloured craft of all kinds at their moorings – a paradise for sailing enthusiasts. Thurlestone, 2 miles to the west, can be reached either by car or via the coastal path. It boasts yet more expanses of golden sands, a regular feature of this lovely coastline. But, in addition, it has a superb cliff-top links golf course, edged by sandy coves, tennis courts and picturesque streets of thatched cottages overlooking the bay. Kingsbridge, the ‘capital’ of the South Hams, has a good choice of interesting shops, a museum and a sports centre with squash, badminton and bowling. Boating and diving trips can be arranged in the Salcombe Estuary, and boats are available for hire. Within easy driving distance are the historic cities of Plymouth and Exeter and Kitley Caves. The wide open spaces and breathtaking scenery of the Dartmoor National Park are less than an hour by car, and there are many National Trust properties, stately homes and interesting gardens within a short drive. Anchor Cottages are set in a little terrace in the village. They have been designed to offer ‘upside-down’ accommodation, with first floor living rooms.     Tuckenhay is only a 20-minute drive from the superb award-winning beach at Blackpool Sands and about 30 minutes from a surfing beach at Bantham, as well as some of the best natural beaches to be found anywhere in the UK.
    There is also extensive access to the coastal footpath for walking and the wilderness that is Dartmoor for walking, climbing and riding.
    This is a mecca for ramblers, bird-watchers, swimmers, surfers, horse riders, golfers and those interested in fishing, boating, sailing and windsurfing.
    In addition, there are many historic NT houses to visit including Agatha Christies’s Greenway as well as a local vineyard (with award-winning wines) at Sharpham.

    Each of the cottages has been individually styled to offer comfortable and spacious accommodation. Great care has been taken to retain the feel of the original buildings and extensive use has been made of traditional materials. Most have garden, terrace or patio.     Many cottages have more than one bathroom and some have an en-suite bathroom to every bedroom. Kitchens are comprehensively equipped: most have dishwashers and all have microwave cookers.
    Couples and honeymooners will feel snug and comfortable in the small cottages: Mill Leat, Mill Stream and Mill Spring. Families can spread out in Papermaker’s or Turbine Cottages, while Mill Lodge, Edgecombe Barn and Tuckenhay Mill House will sleep larger parties in comfort.     THE TUCKENHAY POOLS
    Tuckenhay is renowned for its spectacular award winning indoor pools with glass mosaics and hand-painted silk murals, they combine exotic decoration with the most modern dehumidification and purification equipment and full changing facilities.
    ROMAN POOL
    This dramatic Roman style 32ft pool (4ft 6in deep) has a safe children’s bay reached by separate steps. Completing the experience are sauna and steam room (£1 by slot meter), a refreshing cool drench shower fed from the underground spring and a separate Jacuzzi with hydro jets.
    Open daily from 8.30 am to 8.30 pm. Children must be supervised.
    WATERFALL POOL
    This award winning pool is sculptured in a curved shape over 40ft long (4ft 6in deep), and bounded in part by a natural grotto rock face of tumbling water. It incorporates the ultimate in water movement technology: floor and wall massage jets, water volcanoes, water cannons and swim jets. There are two Jacuzzis - one in the pool - sauna and steam room (£1 by slot meter) and hot and cold spring-fed showers.
    Separate mother and baby changing facilities with walk-in shower/wet room. Open daily from 8.30 am to 6.30 pm. Adults and children over ten with a swimming adult.
    The extra charge for use of pools and heating, detailed in the cottage descriptions is all inclusive in the final balance.

    Tuckenhay Mill has led the way with most of the pools being heated by ground source heat pumps. Awards have been given for energy saving as well as pool design and conversion of buildings. 2008 saw the extension of the 20 acres of stunning natural landscape opening up nearly a mile of footpaths through dells, meadows and woodlands along with a natural waterfall. This is the place to enjoy a personal ‘Spring or Autumn Watch’ with swallows in the log store, buzzards on the adjacent hillside, owls in the woods and ducks and swans down on Bow Creek. Strolls can be taken with the dog and picnics enjoyed on a bench by the river. Children can stroke the goats and even collect eggs for breakfast from the hens (when laying)!

    The holiday location makes it a superb base from which to explore the many and varied attractions of South Devon. Nearby Thurlestone stands as a pretty ‘chocolate-box’ village, with its pink-washed thatched cottages and unspoilt sandy beach framed by rolling farmland. The busy market town of Kingsbridge with its fine Tudor and Georgian buildings acts as the ‘capital’ of the South Hams region, and serves as the hub of local transport services to the surrounding villages. During the summer months, a ferry runs from here to Devon’s most southerly resort of Salcombe, once a former fishing village and now a major sailing resort thronging with visitors. A few miles south of Salcombe at Sharpitor, the National Trust oversees the elegant Edwardian house of Otto Overbeck, a scientist whose varied collection of items is on display to the public. Overlooking the Salcombe estuary, the beautiful garden of Overbecks enjoys fine views and is home to a selection of rare plants, trees and shrubs growing within its warm microclimate.

    In the opposite direction lies Plymouth, with its many naval and seafaring connections. Rebuilt after the Second World War, it stands as a complex mixture of modern day facilities and attractions with strong roots in history – the Barbican area around Sutton Harbour retaining many links. The Elizabethan House found here is furnished as it would have been in the time of Sir Francis Drake (who set out from Plymouth to circumnavigate the world), and the Island House is another place of note – believed to have been where the Pilgrim Fathers lodged before setting sail for America. From Plymouth, river and fishing trips can be arranged and there are sailing and windsurfing schools. Shop in Bigbury.

Situated above the Dawlish railway line, it offers far reaching views across the bay. There is a lovely patio area for al fresco dining whilst watching the lovely sunsets over the sea. Dawlish is a small seaside town approximately 10 miles from the cathedral city of Exeter with its regional airport and M5 motorway junction. It can be reached by regular bus and rail services from the town centre. The immediate countryside is a haven for walkers as the town is close to the Haldon Hills and Dartmoor National Park. There are 18-hole golf courses at Dawlish Warren and Teignmouth, as well as sailing facilities on the nearby Exe and Teign estuaries. The town offers a range of facilities and is well known for the brook and adjacent lawns which are home to a variety of water fowl including the famous black swans which are the town’s emblem. Once down at the sea front, you can enjoy the extensive picturesque shoreline in both directions. To the left, a leisurely sea wall walk takes you to the famed long sandy bathing beaches of Dawlish Warren, skirting the entrance of the Exe Estuary, and its nature reserve full of rare flowers, unusual birds and hidden ponds. To the right takes you to Coryton Cove, along the famous ’atmospheric’ railway line, past the bright row of beach huts and to the Edwardian gentleman’s sandy bathing bay, complete with a small cafe and interesting rock pools to explore. Teignmouth is close with its shops and pier. Sit in one of the local cafes or pubs right on the beach or take a short ferry ride across to Shaldon, where there are many cafes for a Devon cream tea, and a few independent shops. Brixham and Torquay are both just a short drive away, with theatres, boat trips, Sea Life centre and many more attractions. There are also plenty of NT places to visit. Beach 400 yards.
