Axminster

Axminster, in east Devon, is a charming market town that’s built on a hill overlooking the River Axe; ideal for a relaxing and tranquil holiday with family, friends or loved ones, this town has a lot to offer visitors who enjoy exploring the great outdoors and discovering a destination with a rich heritage.

Originally a town that was famous for its cattle market, Axminster is also renowned for its role in the Battle of Trafalgar, as it was on the route that carried dispatches with news updates, and in the town centre there is a plaque commemorating this. You can learn more about the rich history of the town at the Axminster Museum that’s housed in the courtroom of the old Police Station.

The architecture in and around the town includes several Grade II listed buildings, such as Belmont House, Castle Hill House and Buckland House; all worth visiting. If you are looking for culinary options, traditional British fare is on offer at many of the pubs and restaurants in the town, the local farm shop sells produce direct to the public and there is a traditional weekly market.

There’s no shortage of outdoor activities, Axminster will well and truly spoil you for choice. Falling within the East Devon Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, the countryside surrounding the town is truly spectacular and there plenty of walking, cycling and horse riding opportunities on offer. The windswept moors and the woodlands are ideal for a relaxing walk and a visit to the Axe Valley Bird and Animal Park is a treat for visitors of all ages. Axminster and its surrounds are truly spectacular and local wildlife, natural beauty and incredible landscapes are in abundance.
