Tucked away down a little lane, they lie 500 yards from the heart of the attractive old village of Hognaston, which stands on a hillside overlooked by Hognaston Wynn. Many houses in the village date back to the 17th and 18th century, as does the pub. Within walking distance is beautiful Carsington Water, offering superb water sports, sailing and bike hire facilities with an area devoted to wildlife along with cycle and walking trails. Located on the edge of the Peak District, the cottages are just 4 miles from the picturesque market town of Ashbourne known as the ‘Gateway to Dovedale’. Other places to visit nearby include Bakewell, Matlock Bath, Haddon Hall, Chatsworth House and Keddleston Hall, as well as other National Trust and English Heritage properties. It is only a short drive to Dovedale and the other lovely dales of the limestone White Peak District, which offers great walking. A little further afield, visit Alton Towers theme park for a great day out for both adults and children alike, who will also enjoy Go Ape at Buxton. Fine walking country is virtually on the doorstep, and the renowned Tissington and Middleton cycle trails are both close by (with bikes available to hire). The principal centres of the Derbyshire Dales are nearby - Wirksworth, the market town of Ashbourne, attractive Bakewell (of pudding fame) and Matlock: all are fascinating ancient towns. Matlock Bath (6 miles) is popular as an inland resort, standing on the River Derwent amid lovely scenery, and offering boating, angling, bowls, tennis and cricket. Magnificent Chatsworth House (16 miles) boasts a famous collection of art treasures as well as beautiful gardens. Haddon Hall (13 miles) is England’s most complete and authentic medieval house dating back to the 14th century. It is set in lovely countryside overlooking the River Wye, near Bakewell, which houses one of the National Park’s information centres. One of Britain’s premier theme parks, Alton Towers is within easy reach.     The ever popular market town of Bakewell is home to the magnificent historic houses of Chatsworth Estate and Haddon Hall, Buxton with its Pavilion Gardens and Opera House can be reached within 15 minutes.

    There are some stunning walks through Tideswell Dale, where there is a nature reserve; this leads out onto the Monsal Trail, a popular Peak District walking and cycling trail. The Limestone Way also passes through, and with it heading south, it can take you all the way to Rocester on the Staffordshire border, or north to the beautiful honeypot village of Castleton and Mam Tor, which is around seven miles away.
