With its pretty villages, idyllic valleys and historic towns, Derbyshire is one of England’s most interesting counties. Home to the world-famous Peak District National Park, it is the perfect place for an outdoorsy staycation – especially when you are staying at a cottage with a private pool.
The walking routes of the Peak District are famous throughout the world. This is one of the largest national parks in the UK, and millions of people flock here every year to trek the northern Dark Peak and southern White Peak, and explore local villages such as Bakewell (home of the Bakewell Pudding), Tideswell and Edale.
The main towns of the Peak District are Buxton and Chesterfield, and each one offers a completely different experience of the local area. The Victorian spa town of Buxton is a must-visit, and many hikers make a pit stop here to soak in the geothermal waters and stock up on mineral water from St Anne’s Well. Cottages with pools near the villages of Glossop or the Hope Valley are within cycling (or driving) distance of Buxton, but they are still rural enough to be perfectly quiet and private. Meanwhile Chesterfield is famous for its open air market – one of the largest in Britain – where you can buy anything from locally-produced foods, to vintage clothes and artisanal crafts.
Towards the south of the county, the Derbyshire Dales are also worth exploring. Cottages with swimming pools near Ashbourne, Brassington and Matlock are well placed to appreciate the gentle scenery and classic English charm of the dales which fringe the Peak District.
Holiday cottages with pools near Belper are situated directly between the grand city of Derby and the Derbyshire countryside, making them perfect for a trip which will combine culture and nature – arguably the two greatest assets which Derbyshire has to offer.
