Outside there is an enclosed courtyard with a lockable gate and to the front of the cottage, there is a pretty little garden with seating area to make the most of the wonderful views. Wirksworth was once an important lead mining town and is steeped in history. St Mary’s Church has a famous Saxon sarcophagus and there is an array of interesting architecture, independent shops, pubs and restaurants and an art deco cinema. On Tuesday’s there is a small market and every month (Saturday) there is a farmers’ market. The centre of Wirksworth is 10 mins walk down a public footpath or five minutes drive from the cottage.
    Enjoy exploring the ancient “jitties” and courtyards of the Puzzle Gardens, along with the Heritage Centre and the delightful surrounding countryside, including nearby Carsington Water, Black Rocks and the High Peak Trail. Rock climbing and cycling can be enjoyed here at every level and there’s superb walking all around. Well Dressing is unique to Derbyshire, and Wirksworth combines this tradition with a lively carnival and annual arts festival, which attracts international performers of every kind.
