Located within the rocky uplands of the southern White Peak, the village of Brassington offers a great location for exploring the Peak District countryside. The quaint village, consisting of old limestone houses and narrow streets, is an attraction in its own right.

Brassington’s Norman church and Tudor House, the oldest dated house in the village, has served as an inn, a workhouse, and now a private home. The village developed on the lead mining industry, and the hillocks surrounding Brassington are full of abandoned mines and the remains of miners’ buildings.

There’s easy access to The Peak District, an area of picturesque uplands which covers many adjoining counties. It actually has no officially defined boundaries, although the smaller Peak District National Park does, which is very close by.

Despite the name, the region is hilly, but not mountainous. The Derbyshire Dales, or White Peak area of the park, is largely a limestone plateau that contains rolling hills, dales, and green fields, and is famous for its rare wild flowers, including Jacob’s Ladder and orchids.

Walkers will not be disappointed with the High Peak Trail, Limestone Way and Midshires foot paths all passing close by. Other popular activities include climbing, cycling, horse riding, potholing and of course visiting historic country houses and quaint villages.

Among the Peaks’ attractions is the Georgian spa town of Buxton, the pretty riverside town of Bakewell, and the visitor attractions of Matlock Bath and Castleton, which has a Norman castle and show caves. The stately homes at Lyme Park, Chatsworth and Haddon Hall all offer great days out.

Corn has been milled here since the 1500s on the Brookside site, and the present mill buildings date from the 1700s. The original fittings and equipment remain untouched when milling ceased in the early 20th century.
    Ancient stonework, oak beams and centuries old millstones and equipment have been thoughtfully incorporated to create an unforgettable interior for this detached Grade II listed building, one of Derbyshire’s oldest surviving water mill. You will see inside the property original sections of the wooden mill machinery which have been restored to give a fabulous feeling of the building’s history. Outside, the original wood and iron waterwheels have been restored and are turned from time to time, fed from the waters of the restored mill pond.
    Just half a mile from Bradbourne and 5 miles from Ashbourne, the property is surrounded by some of Derbyshire’s prettiest scenery.
