Belper

Belper is a lively market town nestled in the Amber Valley district with strong Georgian influences. The town strikes a balance between its commercial heritage and the tranquil surrounding countryside that merges into the Peak District to the west.

The town lies is at the heart of the Derwent Valley Mills World Heritage Site. Learn about the region’s seminal industrialist history at the Derwent Valley Visitor Centre located in the North Mill. Within the mill complex is the dramatic remains of the East Mill, overlooking the town. As one of the earliest cotton mill complexes, it was the famous Strutt family who pioneered and developed the structure, before taking the industry to America.

From the East Mill, a pretty waterfall flows into the River Derwent and nearby, the banks of the river provide access to the unique Belper River Gardens. These beautiful riverside gardens are over 100 years old and features include an original bandstand, colourful displays of flowerbeds and shrubberies. The recent addition of an historically-inspired play area for children makes this a fun attraction for all the family.

Take a rowing boat upstream, or hire a bike and cycle one of the many specially designated trails through the town and Shipley Country Park. Belper has a regular farmers'' market that’s popular with both the locals and tourists. Converted mills house pottery and antiques traders in tranquil courtyard environments, with plenty of independent restaurants and tearooms.

At the Midland Railway Centre, transport enthusiasts can take in the nostalgia of the age of steam and travel through countryside for 7 miles. Meanwhile the National Tramway Museum at Crich offers a family day out in a relaxing atmosphere of a bygone era.     This imposing 19th century building was originally the coach house and stables for the nearby ‘Owl Coaching Inn’ (reputedly a haunt of highwayman Dick Turpin), that’s now a farm some 2 miles from the historic Derwent Valley mill town of Belper.
