Ashbourne

Known as ‘The Gateway to Dovedale’, the market town of Ashbourne is popular with those who love the outdoors due to its close proximity to the Peak District National Park. One of Derbyshire''s oldest market towns, it provides a great cottage holiday base for exploring this beautiful part of Britain.

The town has a rich history, with a medieval street layout that is still largely made up of traditional stone and brick buildings and cobbled streets; there are some 200 listed buildings here as well as some lovely old coaching inns. As a focal point for a number of coaching routes from London to Carlisle, the town became a very fashionable place in Georgian England. The busy market place is the central hub of the town, with numerous places to eat and drink. There’s a good mix of retailers, including independent boutiques and antique shops and on Thursday a market is held.

Ashbourne is on the doorstep of the Peak District, one of the most popular spots in the UK for hiking, rambling, cycling and general outdoor exploration. There are numerous marked trails, including the nearby Tissington Trail, an old railway line that now provides a lovely route for walkers and cyclists. Bike hire is available at the visitor centre in Mappleton Lane. In addition discover lots of historical walks as well as mile upon mile of quiet, unspoilt woodlands. A great family day out can be found at Alton Towers which is not far away.

One annual event that attracts many visitors is a giant-sized football match, pitting one half of the town against the other. The two-day Royal Shrovetide Football Match can involve thousands of players playing two eight-hour periods, and it has become a long-standing tradition in the town.

    Within easy reach of Stanton are Cheadle, with its magnificent Pugin Church, for the more adventurous, outdoor activities at Carsington Water, and for excitement Alton Towers. Further afield are many places of interest, including Bolsover Castle, Calke Abbey, Chatsworth House, Haddon Hall, Hardwick Old Hall, Kedleston Hall and Shugborough.
