    Just 8 miles away lies the attractive market town of Appleby, once the county town of Westmorland, and renowned for its famous Horse Fair held in June of each year since 1750. Passing through the town, the Settle to Carlisle railway offers visitors the chance to relax and enjoy wonderful scenery as it runs over the famous 24-arched Ribblehead Viaduct before descending two hundred feet in five miles. Slightly further to the north of Appleby, the traditional, bustling market town of Penrith, gateway to Ullswater, can be found. Whether your interests be walking, climbing, fishing, golf, nature, history, art, literature or just relaxing and touring the pretty sandstone villages of Eden and the spectacular and contrasting scenery of the Lakes and Dales, you will find plenty to do and see.
