The historical market town of Penrith is situated in the heart of the Eden Valley and is a popular spot for accessing the beautiful eastern Lake District.

Once the capital of Cumbria, Penrith has a rich history. Visit the medieval ruins of Penrith Castle, the more substantial remains of Brougham Castle and ancient henge sites. Discover the intriguing story of the giant buried in St Andrew’s churchyard and enjoy views of Scotland from the heights of Beacon Pike just to the north of the town.

From here, views of the Eden Valley, the Pennines and some of the north Lakes can also be seen on a clear day. Penrith’s tourist information centre and museum has information on the archaeology, history and geology of the area. In the evening, visitors can sample the local Cumbrian night life in the town’s traditional pubs.

Penrith is situated just three miles from the lakes and fells of the Lake District National Park and has easy access to the hidden delights of the tranquil Eden Valley. This sometimes overlooked region is well worth exploring for its unspoilt countryside and picturesque rural villages.

Penrith station is on the west coast main line and is accessible from London in under 3 hours.
