Find cottages in Penrith

The historical market town of Penrith is situated in the heart of the Eden Valley and is a popular spot for accessing the beautiful eastern Lake District.

Once the capital of Cumbria, Penrith has a rich history. Visit the medieval ruins of Penrith Castle, the more substantial remains of Brougham Castle and ancient henge sites. Discover the intriguing story of the giant buried in St Andrew’s churchyard and enjoy views of Scotland from the heights of Beacon Pike just to the north of the town.

From here, views of the Eden Valley, the Pennines and some of the north Lakes can also be seen on a clear day. Penrith’s tourist information centre and museum has information on the archaeology, history and geology of the area. In the evening, visitors can sample the local Cumbrian night life in the town’s traditional pubs.

Penrith is situated just three miles from the lakes and fells of the Lake District National Park and has easy access to the hidden delights of the tranquil Eden Valley. This sometimes overlooked region is well worth exploring for its unspoilt countryside and picturesque rural villages.

Discover the history of Cumbria, follow Roman roads, ruins and ancient monasteries. Activities include climbing, mountain biking, and a whole range of water sports. If you like walking, both the Lakes and Eden Valley will provide everything you could wish for, from riverside and lakeside strolls to more challenging ridge walks and scrambles.

For days out in the National Park cyclists will find permitted cycleways and bridleways with incredible views, and Whinlatter and Grizedale Forests are full of mountain biking routes. Get out on the lakes kayaking, canoeing, windsurfing or boating, and come back to your cosy home from home.

Penrith holiday cottages provide the ideal location for touring both the beautiful Eden Valley and the Lake District. Come and discover Cumbria’s past and present from the comfortable seat of the Eden Valley''s market town.
