Matterdale End is a delightful hamlet in a most picturesque settings close to Ullswater. With views to die for of the surrounding Ullswater Fells, this is the perfect base from which to explore the glorious Lake District.

Ullswater is often said to be one of the loveliest of all the lakes in the Lake District, surrounded by stunning mountainous scenery, this part of the UK is regarded by those in the know as having some of the best walking terrain in the world. It was the gorgeous displays of daffodils here that inspired the great poet Wordsworth’s famous lyric poem.

During the summer months the Ullswater steamers lazily criss-cross the lake, which is scattered with the bright sails of windsurfers and yachts, and people congregate on the shore to enjoy the views and picnic. The area has a long heritage stretching back to the Vikings and beyond. The eerie stone circle at nearby Barton Fell is a remnant from ancient times, and has a unique atmosphere all of its own. Two medieval castles lie within a short distance of the lake and there are a number of charming traditional pubs in which to relax and enjoy some fine local food and ale.

Cottages in Ullswater are, within the vicinity of the lake and provide great access to the Lake District hot-spots including Keswick, Ambleside and Windermere as well the tranquil Eden Valley to the east.
