Lowick

Woodgate, Lowick Green and Lowick Bridge are all tiny picturesque hamlets that make up the village of Lowick, situated within the Lake District National Park and offering a true slice of untouched rural life set amongst stunning Lakeland scenery.

Located at the southern end of Coniston Water, Lowick is the ideal holiday destination for anyone looking to get off the beaten track yet be close to all the facilities and attractions of the central lakes. Perfect for families, friends and couples who want to escape to the peace of the countryside, there are several historical places of interest and outdoor activities galore in this quaint destination.

Lowick’s most prominent landmark is the church of St Luke, a gorgeous stone church that was built in 1845 and captures the essence of the building techniques used at the time. Stunning stain glass windows are one of the church''s best features; the prepossessing tower contrasts starkly with the verdant green countryside. The Manor of Lowick is another famous building in the village and was originally owned by the 5th baron of Kendal, passing ownership to Robert de Turribus during Henry II’s reign.

The village has a rich history and many of the buildings that line the tiny streets date back centuries. The now defunct Village Inn dates back to the 1600s and the Red Lion Pub is just as old. In the hamlet of Lowick Green look out for one of the last surviving red phone boxes in rural Britain.

This typical Lake District village is perfect for anyone who enjoys the great outdoors, and the stunning surrounding countryside is ideal for long walks, cycling or horse riding. The Cumbrian countryside is renowned for its natural beauty and the farmland, fells and forests that are found just outside Lowick are gloriously beautiful.

Enjoy a rural getaway with great natural attractions; search for cottages in Lowick and discover a quaint corner of English countryside today.

This terraced holiday cottage is a peaceful retreat and is part of an old farm that was converted some years ago. The cottage has a lovely woodburner, which gives the property a cosy country feel that makes it special. This is the perfect springboard to the Lakes, and if you like your walking, there are many walks from Hatherthwaite up to the Lakes and beyond. Running along the line that once transported gunpowder to the dockyards, the railway now carries tourists along the scenic route in traditional, heritage steam trains. Many of the old industrial buildings have been converted into flats or houses, whilst a number of beautiful holiday cottages have sprung up over the years to accommodate the large number of tourists who arrive in the village each year. The village’s history lives on in buildings like the old Gunpowder Works, with its ornate clock tower, and St Anne’s Church, which was built in 1824. A true taste of local life can be found at the local pub, which specialises in real ales, as well as putting on live music and quiz nights. Beach 3½ miles. Shop 1 mile, pub and restaurant ¼mile.
