This delightful cottage, adjacent to the owners home, is situated on the edge of the small village of Gleaston on the Furness Peninsula. The cottage was originally part of Guards House Farm and was an eight cow shippon (milking parlour). It has been converted into a fully insulated, warm, cosy and comfortable dwelling with all accommodation situated on one level. It features beautiful original wooden beams and slate floors, and opens out onto a large mature garden.
There are easy walks from the village to enjoy including a walk past Gleaston water mill and café to Gleaston Castle ruins, which is mentioned in the Doomsday Book. Going north brings visitors to the village of Stainton, where opposite the village green, is the local inn. For the more energetic, head south east for a longer walk and enjoy the great views of the expanse of Morecambe Bay, which leads to the coast and beach.
There is quick and easy access to the market town of Ulverston with its old pubs, restaurants and golf course. Ulverston was the home of Stan Laurel and the birthplace of the Quaker movement at Swarthmoor Hall. All the attractions of the Lake District National Park are easily accessible with Coniston Lake and Lake Windermere being about 12 miles away. The Furness Peninsula has many sandy beaches, pebble beaches, sand dunes, bird watching, the South Lakes Animal Park, Furness Abbey and Pier Island and Castle. Popular Birkrigg Common, which is within walking distance, has incredible panoramic views of Morecambe Bay. The town of Barrow offers other attractions such as large stores, multiplex cinema, nightclubs and a golf course. Nearby, Walney Island has a Nature Reserve, a large expanse of sandy beach, a gliding club and golf course. Beach 2 miles. Shop 2½ miles, restaurant ¾ mile.
