Grange-over-Sands

Picturesque Grange over Sands looks out across Morecambe Bay and grew from a small hamlet into a promising small town with an influx of Edwardian era money. These historical roots still remain to this day, with a beautiful sea-front promenade, numerous ornamental gardens and traditional shopping arcades.

A quintessentially British seaside resort, Grange over Sands has retained the old-fashioned feel of a time gone by, with classic tea shops, cafes, family-run shops and restaurants in the town centre. In fact the whole town prides itself on the large number of family-run businesses in the area, giving a real sense of community spirit and offering visitors a very high standard of friendly, personal service wherever you go.

On the outskirts of the town are some of the finest parks and nature reserve areas in Cumbria, which attract a great deal of interest from nature enthusiasts, especially bird-watchers.

A cottage in Grange over Sands is perfect for days out along the coast and around the Cumbrian peninsula and you can be in the heart of the Lake District in no time to explore the beautiful Lakes and resorts. You''ll also find peaceful flower meadows, woodland areas that have been untouched for hundreds of years and dozens of great walking paths and trails.

Close by the village of Cartmel is a picture-postcard Lakeland village with traditional white-washed stone and wood buildings and a number of listed buildings which date back to medieval times. The charming winding narrow streets surround a small village square and the village''s Sticky Toffee Pudding is its very own speciality and can be found in the village shops. For a fine dining experience, the village is home to the Michelin-starred restaurant, L''Enclume, which is acclaimed as one of the best in the country and would require forward booking.

Each year Cartmel Races is held at the unique, charming and very compact race course that’s so close to the village that it’s almost part of the village itself.

Grange over Sands holiday cottages put you in the perfect place to explore the very best of Cumbria.

The town has retained its tasteful, low-key character since the mid Victorian railway arrival changed a sleepy fishing village into a genteel holiday resort. Not renowned for its nightlife and amusement arcades, Grange-over-Sands is still appreciated by those looking for quiet quality, with nearby Cartmel, the birthplace of sticky toffee puddings, providing popular summer time National Hunt race meetings, several gastro pubs and the nationally acclaimed L’Enclume restaurant amongst the historical cottages clustering around its magnificent 12th-century priory church.

This quaint cottage is nestled in the village of Backbarrow which sits on the River Leven, in the beautiful Leven Valley, five miles north east of the busy Cumbrian town of Ulverston. Backbarrow has a lot of history and has quite a tale making it very popular to the avid historians. You can enjoy visiting the village to learn about its important role during the industrial revolution. In the 19th century, Backbarrow was a hub of iron and cotton production, as well as being famous for producing the pigment ultramarine or “dolly blue”. The remnants of this colourful production line can still be found at the old factory, known as “The Bluemills”. Another lasting testament to Backbarrow’s industrial past stands in the form of the old ironworks, which were built in 1711. Visitors can see the old blast furnace stack, which has been lovingly restored as part of the development of a new group of mews style houses on the banks of the river. Backbarrow’s location at the southern end of Lake Windermere, between Lakeside to Haverthwaite Railway and the River Leven, makes it a powerful draw for tourists who can explore the nearby National Trust-owned Fell Foot Park and Beatrix Potter country. Coarse fishing is available at Lake Windermere and River Leven, a licence is required.
