Carlisle

The northern Cumbrian city of Carlisle has plenty to offer holidaymakers with places of historical interest, loads of outdoor activities and easy access to some of the most rugged and beautiful landscapes in Britain.

You will step back in time when you visit Carlisle Castle, a medieval fortress that is more than nine centuries old and one of the city’s best-loved landmarks. The Castle is close to the World Heritage Site of Hadrian’s Wall, and a walk along the ruins of this Roman construct or a visit to the interactive visitor centre at Birdoswald Roman Fort is the perfect day out for anyone who enjoys a bit of history.

Wander through the Guildhall Museum, which is located in one of the oldest buildings in the city, for a great insight into the heritage of the area. The Nenthead mines offer a glimpse into the lives of Carlisle inhabitants from years past. Carlisle Cathedral, with its stained glass window and magnificently ornate ceiling, is a stunning example of 14th century architecture and is also one of the city’s most popular landmarks.

For those who wish to explore Carlisle and enjoy a more active holiday, there is a wealth of outdoor activities for visitors of all ages. The nearby Talkin Tarn Country Park offers canoeing, fishing, rowing and other water based activities and there are plenty of fishing spots in and around the city. A walk along a section of the Hadrian’s Wall National Trail is an ideal way to appreciate the stunning views of the surrounding countryside and a great way to explore the region. Carlisle is a popular destination for cyclists and the many routes and paths here are suited to riders of varying capabilities.
