Broughton-in-furness

Broughton-in-Furness is situated in a picture perfect location at the north of the Duddon Valley. Parts of the village date back as far as the 11th century, and much of the architecture is Georgian. At the heart of the village is a charming cobbled square, with an ancient horse chestnut tree rising at the centre, and a good selection of shops and cosy pubs grouped around it.

Broughton is the perfect base for walkers of all levels, with the windswept beauty of the Lake District fells, the tranquil Duddon Valley and the wild coastline right on its doorstep. Intrepid visitors will find that there are excellent local facilities for canoeing, sky diving, climbing, mountain biking and horse-riding. The town has an impressive literary heritage; William Wordsworth was inspired by the natural beauty of the surrounding area, and Branwell Bronte called the town home for a short period.

There is plenty on offer within easy reach of the village for families. Nearby Ford Park has a variety of fun indoor and outdoor activities, including a fantastically fast zip wire and an instructive nature walk. The South Lakes Wild Animal Park is packed with some amazing wildlife, including big cats, giraffes and friendly penguins. Or walk the Coniston Treasure Trail, solving the intriguing clues as you go.
