Bassenthwaite

The village of Bassenthwaite sits just a short walk from the tranquil shores of Bassentwaite Lake in the Northern Lakes and only a few miles north west of Keswick. This traditional Lakeland village is complete with a stream running through the middle and an old-fashioned village green.

Bassenthaite Lake is a National Nature Reserve that sits amongst untouched woodlands and wild flower meadows. A favourite spot for birdwatchers (Look out for the ospreys in the summer months) and other nature enthusiasts, the lake and the surrounding woodlands are as peaceful and pleasant as anywhere you will find.

The village itself has just one pub and no shops, so you won''t find a more perfect place for total peace and quiet. For convenience, there is one shop on the outskirts of the area and local produce can be bought at nearby farmers'' markets, and of course Keswick which is only a stone’s throw away.

On the land outside the village, there are a number of stately homes and country houses in immaculate condition that are well worth going out of your way to see. The area is also home to a number of picturesque churches, such as the ancient Church of St Bega.

Bassenthwaite is well located for country walks and trails and the lake itself has a sailing club for those that feel like trying their hand. Nearby popular walking areas include the imposing Skiddaw, Lord''s Seat and Binsey Fell, all offering very impressive views. If you feel like a round of golf to start your day, nearby Cockermouth Golf Club is just up the road.

Snittlegarth is home to roe deer, badgers, foxes, pheasants and a variety of songbirds, with red squirrels approaching the lodges looking to feed. The original Snittlegarth Estate was owned by Lord Gillford and extended to 12,000 acres.  It is now farmed on a smaller scale and has the benefit of footpaths from the doorstep on to Binsey Fell and beyond. Snittlegarth lies in a truly tranquil valley close to Ireby and Uldale on the northern fringe of the National Park and provides an idyllic retreat for those who wish to escape from the hustle and bustle of every day life. There are pubs in both Uldale and Ireby, each serving bar meals.
