Find cottages in Appleby

The town of Appleby-in-Westmorland sits within a loop of the River Eden in the County of Cumbria. An ancient market town that was formed after the Norman Conquest, Appleby is home to a number of listed buildings and has remained largely unchanged in its layout for hundreds of years.

The Eden Valley is a peaceful and incredibly scenic area, offering impressive views across the Cumbria countryside. The most impressive feature of the local landscape is ancient Appleby Castle, which sits overlooking the River Eden. Build in the early 1100s, the castle consists of a medieval keep and a fine mansion, both of which are Grade I listed buildings. The town itself has a quaint local cinema as well as some great places to eat and drink in the evening.

The town is a perfect destination for anyone looking for a really relaxing and simple break in the country. The area is not overly busy, so quiet river side and country walks will be exactly that - quiet. But the town is also close enough to the popular outdoor playgrounds of the Lake District National Park and the North Pennines, so if you want a day out with a little more activity, you don''t have to go far at all.

There is of course one time in the year when Appleby does become a hive of activity; Appleby Horse Fair is held annually every June when hundreds from the travelling community descent on the town to exercise, display and trade their horses.

Stay in one of our charming holiday cottages in Appleby this summer and explore beautiful Cumbria and discover the Eden Valley in complete peace and quiet.
