Ambleside

A vibrant town surrounded by magnificent Lakeland Fells, by the shores of Windermere.

As a gateway to the stunning Langdale Valley, Ambleside is a magnet for visitors seeking a relaxing break or outdoor enthusiasts looking for a challenge. Offering easy access to a wide range of activities, including water sports, walking, climbing and cycling, Low Wood Watersports and Activity Centre caters for all tastes and abilities.

Unsurprisingly, Ambleside is known to many as the walking capital of South Lakeland and is abound with routes, from lakeside strolls to gruelling fells. For a less challenging walk, Loughrigg Terrace provides breathtaking views over Grasmere and Rydal Water, while Jenkin Crag provides the perfect spot for a romantic picnic.

The fells just west of the town offer a great introduction to cycling in the Lakes, while those looking for a more strenuous ride should try the bridleway that links Ambleside with Troutbeck. Located in the town is the iconic Bridge House; one of the most photographed spots in the Lakes. There are also lots of wonderful literary and artistic heritage here which can be explored in the town''s galleries and museums and a plethora of specialist shops selling everything from outdoor equipment to local art and crafts; look out for the Made in Cumbria logo to show you are supporting the local craftsmen.

Martineau wrote the most influential of the guides to the Lake District. In her typical and thorough fashion she had, in a...
