Lying within the North Pennines, Alston is the highest market town in England; steeped in history, the cobbled streets and stone buildings dating back to the 17th century give this town a charming ambiance.

The town has a steeply rising cobbled high street and a very distinctive market cross. St Augustine’s Church was built in 1869, with a record of the foundations dating back to the 12th century. For a small town, Alston has a good selection of shops including many small gift shops, and a thriving arts and crafts community. There is a butcher’s shop, bakery, and larger convenience stores, along with an ample choice of inns, eateries and tea rooms.

Evidence of Alston’s rich lead mining past can be found in the surrounding landscape.
