The town has a steeply rising cobbled high street and a very distinctive market cross. St Augustine’s Church was built in 1869, with a record of the foundations dating back to the 12th century. For a small town, Alston has a good selection of shops including many small gift shops, and a thriving arts and crafts community. There is a butcher’s shop, bakery, and larger convenience stores, along with an ample choice of inns, eateries and tea rooms.

Evidence of Alston’s rich lead mining past can be found in the surrounding landscape. Alston Moor is situated within an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty with a good number of nature trails that would suit a relaxing ramble or short walk for all the family to challenging 20 mile walks, such as the South Tyne Trail.

The Pennine Way, the UK''s first National Trail also passes through. Several waterfalls descend from the South Tyne and Nent rivers on Alston Moor, the highest of which being Ashgill Force with a 50ft drop into the sparkling pools beneath. The South Tyneside Railway is England’s highest narrow gauge railway. Running from April to October, it offers a picturesque journey through the surrounding countryside.
