County Durham

The cathedral city of Durham is the jewel in the crown of this stunningly beautiful county. Durham Cathedral and the nearby Durham Castle (both UNESCO World Heritage Sites) offer a glimpse into the past when this city was one of the holiest places in Great Britain.

When you are staying at a cottage with a pool in County Durham, you can afford to really take your time and discover what makes this place so special. Spend a day in the city itself and learn about its history at the libraries of the University of Durham (which is regularly voted one of the top universities in the world). Then venture out into the countryside to see another side of the county.

The North Pennines AONB can be found towards the west of County Durham, and cottages with private pools near the towns of Stanhope and Consett offer easy access to the famous peaks and valleys of the surrounding area. There are many great scenic routes around the national park, which are best explored on foot. Pack a picnic, wear good hiking boots, and set off for a day in the wild Durham countryside, before returning home in the evening for some R&R at a luxurious cottage with a swimming pool.

Holiday cottages with pools are also a great base for historical tours of the area. Barnard Castle is home to one of the area’s most impressive sights – the magnificent Barnard Castle itself, which sits on a high rock overlooking the River Tees. Bishop Auckland is a perfect example of an old English market town, with cobbled streets and stunning architecture at places like St Peter’s Chapel.

And if all that history and natural beauty gets too much for you, you could always just stay in and enjoy all the mod cons of your very own cottage and your very own pool.
