The beautiful parish church of Treslothan is a short walk down the road, as is the 5000-year-old Giant’s Quiot that now attracts a gathering that celebrate the Summer solstice. Troon itself has a supermarket and a pharmacy, whilst Camborne town centre and the Heartlands Cultural Experience are both a mere 5-minute drive away. The ruins of Carn Brea Castle and Bassett Monument are a short walk away either with or without the dog, and once at the top, the view over Cornwall stretches for miles. Archaeological digs have revealed this area to date back to Neolithic times and later Iron Age occupation.
    The harbour at Portreath was built to service the flourishing ore industry centred around the Camborne and Redruth area, and by 1827 was said to be the most important port in Cornwall. The Portreath Tramway that linked the harbour to the copper mines at Scorrier and St Day was the first railway to be built in Cornwall. Today, they form the Mineral Tramways Coast to Coast cycle way and footpath that lead walkers and cyclists in to the very heart of Cornwalls industrial mining past. One of the routes, known as the Great Flat Lode Trail, is a circular trail that takes in Carn Brea. A further connection with the Basset Monument is Tehidy Country Park, once owned by the Basset family, the estate was purchased by Cornwall County Council and today the grounds are open to the public for great walks, and a variety of events are held throughout the year.
    A 15-minute drive takes you to the glorious, golden sandy beach at Hayle which stretches for miles, whilst St Ives is world famous for its quaint and charm, and is a haven for artists and visitors alike. The coastal path along this stretch of Cornwall are nothing short of exhilarating, with ocean views that have been described as simply stunning, whilst the resident colony of about 30 seals at Godrevy are a year-round attraction not to be missed. Helston, 10 miles, was originally a thriving port, however, the river silted up over the years. Where the river joins the sea is now Cornwalls largest lake. Horse riding nearby. Beach 2 miles. This holiday cottage is ideally situated in the historic fishing port of Looe, with many dog friendly pubs, cafés and restaurants. A few minutes walk takes you to Hannafore where you can play tennis, bowling or have fun on the putting greens, whilst enjoying the superb views from this part of Looe looking out across the bay to Rame Head and over to Looe Island. A short walk or a ferry ride across the river takes you to East Looe and onto the sandy town beach with Banjo Pier and boat trips to Looe Island, sea fishing trips and sightseeing along the rugged coastline. A stroll around the narrow streets is a delightful way to spend a lazy day exploring the friendly charms of this quaint fishing town including Looe town museum situated in the medieval Guildhall which gives an historic glimpse into the town’s past.
    Looe is home to its own music festival held during September which attracts many well-known musicians and provides a family atmosphere throughout the whole town. Early May sees the Festival of the Sea focusing on cooking demos with freshly caught seafood available on the harbour side. In November is Looe‘s own literary festival and at New Year the town celebrates with fancy dress and spectacular fireworks from the pier. Looe is an ideal base for walkers to explore the South Cornwall coastal path east to Rame Head and Plymouth, or west to Polperro and Fowey. Fowey is home to its own royal sailing club and annual regatta (August), and the literary festival celebrating the town’s most famous daughter Daphne Du Maurier. Polperro is an unspoilt picturesque fishing village, and a peaceful stroll to one of the harbour side pubs will transport you back to a different era. Looe is also perfectly situated to explore east Cornwall and a short drive to the north will bring you to Bodmin Moor, home to Jamaica Inn. There are many National Trust houses and gardens nearby such as Lanhydrock, Cotehele, Mount Edgcombe Estate and Antony House, which was the film set for Tim Burton’s film Alice in Wonderland. The Eden Project and the Lost Gardens of Heligan near Megavissey are also easily reached and are both essential destinations for all visitors to Cornwall.     Cornwall has plenty of family attractions, and is also well-known for arts, culture, history, heritage, gardens, food, drink, film, TV and literature. Beaches in the local area, Watergate Bay, and the surf beaches of Newquay, lie within five miles along the coast road southwards, and the seven bays and beaches of St Merryn and Padstow are 10 miles to the north. Further afield, the beaches of Marazion, St Ives, Sennen, Kynance Cove, Falmouth, Perranporth and Porthcurno are among the top ten in the county (according to the Cornwall Guide). Even if the weather is poor, do what the locals do - wrap up warm, take a brisk walk in the wind, watch the waves crash on the rocks and let the Cornish sea air blow the cobwebs away!

    Other attractions including the educational Eden Project and Healey’s Cornish Cyder Farm, are not far away. Cornwall is steeped in myths, legends and folklore, from ‘piskies’ and ’faeries’ to kings and castles.
