    National Trust Property

    A most beautiful National Trust estate, set on the banks of the River Tamar, Cotehele was the ancestral home to the Edgcumbe family for centuries. This magnificent Tudor house, perched high above the River Tamar, is decorated with tapestries, arms and armour, pewter, brass and old oak furniture. In the gardens and grounds of Cotehele, you can easily lose yourself exploring this most tranquil and beautiful location. Admire the stunning, formally planted terraces of gorgeous, colourful plants, or wander down to the Valley Garden, which includes a medieval stewpond and dovecote, which in turn leads down to the River Tamar. Sit a while and seek tranquillity in the beautiful Upper Garden and explore the orchards planted with local varieties of apples and cherry trees.

    From early spring, bright flowers adorn the grounds and the colourful herbaceous borders are simply stunning in high season. With orchards bearing fruit in the autumn and dainty snowdrops peeking through in winter, there will be horticultural activity all year round. This very popular National Trust property appeals to people of all ages, but Cotehele will be available to guests in early mornings and after the day visitors have gone home.

    In the 19th century, local industries boomed and Cotehele Quay bustled with vessels loading and unloading cargo. Paddle steamers came upriver to see the Tamar Valley’s famous blossoming orchards, and small boats carried market-gardening produce back down the river for sale at Devonport Market. The restored sailing barge Shamrock is moored at the quay and a proper Cornish cream tea can be enjoyed in the Edgcumbe tea room. The Discovery Centre here tells the story of the Tamar Valley, offering a gateway to the wider estate and is just a short walk through the Morden Valley to the sister property Cotehele Mill. Cotehele welcome dogs and there are some great walks on the miles of paths around the estate, at the quay and in the mill grounds. Dogs are also welcome in the outside seating area of the restaurants. Assistance dogs only are welcome in the house and garden.
    The enchanting hamlet of Botherick is on the southern edge of the Cotehele Estate. It grew up in the 19th century, probably to house miners working in the nearby silver-lead mines and the men working in the limekilns and on the quays beside the river below. Tremletts 4 is the end cottage in the row, with lovely views over open countryside. On a clear day, you can see all the way down the Tamar Valley to the two bridges at Saltash. With its own private garden, Tremletts 4 makes a relaxing and secluded base for exploring the lovely Cotehele Estate and the wider valley. Beach 16 miles. Shop 4½ miles, pub and restaurant 1½ miles.

    It has often been said that Rosecraddoc Manor must be the nearest thing to paradise. The manor properties stand in 38 acres of beautiful grounds and woodlands, set around a lovely lake, stocked with carp, roach and bream. Rosecraddoc Manor features a variety of properties surrounding the historic Manor House to cater for all tastes whether classic, modern, cosy or cottage style is what you are looking for. The manor was built in the 1820s on the site of a much older house mentioned in the Domesday Book. It is Grade II listed, along with two bridges in the grounds, and has now been converted into these attractive apartments and cottages, making a perfect base for your Cornish holiday.
    On site you can fish in the lake (bring own fishing licence, barbless hooks and landing nets must be used, please) or play tennis on the all weather court (smooth soled tennis shoes to be worn, not squash shoes; please bring your own racquets and tennis balls). If you can bear to leave this beautiful spot, just 2½ miles away in Liskeard there is a superb leisure complex, where you can enjoy squash, badminton, gym, indoor bowls and indoor leisure pools, which include a children’s pool and flume, as well as the main pool.
    Within 4 miles you can explore Bodmin Moor, where you can go riding, walking or even try water sports on Siblyback Lake - wind surfing, dinghy sailing and canoeing are available. To the south, lovely sandy beaches and pretty fishing harbours lie along the coast. Several excellent golf courses can also be found in the area; and the Eden Project is only 20 miles away.
    The Manor and the Coach House have been tastefully and sympathetically restored to please the most discerning guest. The cottages are refs B6859, CV7102, CV7103, CV17, CV13 and CV44. Some of the cottages are suitable for guests with disabilities (CV44 is designed for the convenience of visitors with disabilities, as well as able-bodied visitors), and ref B6859 boasts an American fridge freezer. Access to the front door of the manor is by 3 stone steps. The apartments are refs CV14, CV20, CV11 and B4866 which are all on the first floor and ref CV12 is a ground floor apartment. Whichever you choose you will find it immaculately clean, with freshly laundered linen and tea towels. Please bring your own towels. Cot linen is not supplied. Cornwall is well known for its mild climate, but at Rosecraddoc Manor, even if it is cold outside, your accommodation will be warm and welcoming. Jacuzzi and spa baths are available in some properties (please check prior to booking). There are several pubs locally, and a leisurely stroll to the foot of the drive and across the road leads to a licensed bar and restaurant. The Village Inn, serving a wide range of alcoholic and non alcoholic beverages, and with an extensive menu including children’s meals. It also hosts a large TV screen, patio area, pool room with dart board and wide range of tourist information and leaflets, quiz nights and curry nights are held regularly during the high season. With its beaches comes surf and surf schools, so you can try your hand at this exhilarating sport. Visit many of the local attractions, such as Watergate Bay which is home to Jamie Oliver’s ‘Fifteen’ restaurant and the fishing village of Padstow, with its many excellent restaurants. Discover the flat walking and cycling trail that links Padstow to Wadebridge and hugs the shoreline of the beautiful Camel estuary all the way along. Bike hire is available at both ends of this stunning trail. Truro the capital of Cornwall is easily reached and is a must to explore the narrow streets and enjoy the restaurants, shopping, museum, cinema and theatre for an alternative day or evening out. Both properties provide an ideal base to explore further afield. The Lost Gardens of Heligan, the Eden Project and many NT gardens, parks and houses are close by, such as Lanhydrock House and Trerice Manor. St Ives, Falmouth, Fowey and Mevagissey are all easily reached and all provide an alternative day out. Golf, cycling, horse riding, surfing, sailing, and kayaking area all available locally.
