This magnificent Tudor house, perched high above the River Tamar, is decorated with tapestries, arms and armour, pewter, brass and old oak furniture. In the gardens and grounds of Cotehele, you can easily lose yourself exploring this most tranquil and beautiful location. Admire the stunning, formally planted terraces of gorgeous, colourful plants, or wander down to the Valley Garden, which includes a medieval stewpond and dovecote, which in turn leads down to the River Tamar. Sit a while and seek tranquillity in the beautiful Upper Garden and explore the orchards planted with local varieties of apples and cherry trees.

    From early spring, bright flowers adorn the grounds and the colourful herbaceous borders are simply stunning in high season. The restored sailing barge Shamrock is moored at the quay and a proper Cornish cream tea can be enjoyed in the Edgcumbe tea room. The Discovery Centre here tells the story of the Tamar Valley, offering a gateway to the wider estate and is just a short walk through the Morden Valley to the sister property Cotehele Mill. Cotehele welcome dogs and there are some great walks on the miles of paths around the estate, at the quay and in the mill grounds. In the mill building opposite, you can watch the mill in action twice a week throughout the season, and its excellent stone-ground flour is available to buy: it will make you want to bake! Just along the coast from Looe, nestles the tiny fishing village of Polperro with its harbour and narrow streets. There is a network of footpaths which pass through some of the most scenic countryside in the district, one of which leads directly from the village. The city of Plymouth is just 18 miles and is home to the award winning National Marine Aquarium. Our mild winters ensure that many plants are able to thrive in Cornwall and with this, the Lost Gardens of Heligan and the Eden Project are both within 25 miles. There are many historic houses to visit close by including Cotehele, Lanhydrock and Antony. There is horse riding nearby, and golf courses within 20 miles include the ’course that Jack built’ at St Mellion, Looe Bindown and Lanhydrock. Liskeard sports a leisure centre with swimming pool, squash, indoor bowling, badminton and fitness suite. From here you can take the lovely branch line which runs down to Looe through the wooded East Looe Valley. Nearby Siblyback Lake offers windsurfing, dinghy sailing, canoeing and fishing.     Nestling in Danescombe Woods on the banks of the River Tamar, just a short walk along the riverside to the historic village of Calstock. Danescombe Woods is part of the National Trust Cotehele Estate, once a thriving copper mining area. The old ruins of tin mines from last century are scattered through the woodland scenery. The iconic tall chimney stacks can still be seen and Danescombe Cottage and sits below one of these towering above. Set off the beaten track, along a trail through the woods, this is a very tranquil place to cosy up in one of these delightful cottages and relax. For the adventurous, there are some wonderful woodland and riverside walks through to Cotehele House and Gardens. The woodland abounds with wildlife and a little stream run to the front of the cottages. Calstock is a delightful village, with two pubs and a little village shop; it is very picturesque with its spectacular Victorian railway viaduct spanning the river and still in operation today taking train passengers from Cornwall into Plymouth. Some of these have private terraces with hot tubs, many have enclosed garden spaces. Most of the homes are dog-friendly, as is the beach, no matter what time of year you come and stay. You can swim in one of our two swimming pools, let off steam in the spa, or lounge in the café. There’s also a children’s play area, table tennis and a DVD library. The Park grounds offer sun traps, hidden pathways and fruit and herb gardens which guests are invited to sample. Next to the café is the heated indoor pool, sauna and steam room. Outside, you’ll find another heated pool in a south-facing garden setting with views across the valley, complete with a bar serving food and drinks throughout the summer.

    If you’re looking for adventure, take a stroll along north Cornwall’s breath-taking coastal paths, beaches and cliffs. For something more extreme, learn to surf at a surf school on Mawgan Porth Beach, or maybe try kite surfing at Watergate Bay, just two miles down the coast. If your food supplies are running low, pick up some holiday essentials at the convenience store in Mawgan Porth Village, or dine at Jamie Oliver’s ’Fifteen’ restaurant at Watergate Bay, or Rick Stein’s Seafood Café at Padstow.

    Cornwall has plenty of family attractions, and is also well-known for arts, culture, history, heritage, gardens, food, drink, film, TV and literature. Beaches in the local area, Watergate Bay, and the surf beaches of Newquay, lie within five miles along the coast road southwards, and the seven bays and beaches of St Merryn and Padstow are 10 miles to the north. Further afield, the beaches of Marazion, St Ives, Sennen, Kynance Cove, Falmouth, Perranporth and Porthcurno are among the top ten in the county (according to the Cornwall Guide). Even if the weather is poor, do what the locals do - wrap up warm, take a brisk walk in the wind, watch the waves crash on the rocks and let the Cornish sea air blow the cobwebs away!

    Other attractions including the educational Eden Project and Healey’s Cornish Cyder Farm, are not far away. Cornwall is steeped in myths, legends and folklore, from ‘piskies’ and ’faeries’ to kings and castles. Cornwall’s 50-plus gardens all enjoy the warmth of the Gulf Stream, which means that many are home to rare tropical plants, flowers and trees.
