Saltash

A market town since the 12th century, Saltash''s enviable position on the River Tamar in the Tamar Valley is in an Area of Outstanding natural Beauty and the gateway to Cornwall.

As the largest town in east Cornwall, there''s plenty to see and do right here on the doorstep, but excellent road and rail networks make it the ideal base from which to explore both Devon and Cornwall.

The famous Royal Albert Bridge, designed by Isambard Kingdom Brunel, is one sight visitors to the area won''t want to miss. It''s still one of the great bridges of the world, celebrated for its engineering brilliance. One of the best ways of seeing the bridge is to get there by train. Alternatively, great views can be seen from the walkway on the Tamar road bridge or the Waterside area of town.

In Waterside there are riverside pubs that are perfect for whiling away an hour or two before taking the ferry across to the Plymouth Barbican, or just taking a cruise up the River Tamar. Parking is free, and there are boat-launching facilities for those who wish to take advantage of them.

The town of Saltash itself is lively area filled with shops, including independent gift and souvenir retailers as well as the familiar chain stores.
