Callington and the Tamar Valley

A picturesque market town steeped in history and a stone’s throw from Tamar Valley, Callington is the perfect destination for a culturally inspiring holiday.

Located in the South East of Cornwall, Callington was once a busy mining town famous for its markets and fairs. Today the area still retains that lively community spirit through unique local produce and arts projects.

At the heart of the town is the 15th century church of St Mary''s, with the original well that once supplied the town still flowing nearby. Budding historians will not be disappointed with the wealth of Celtic relics, ancient tombs and 13th century heritage. Granted a market charter in 1267 by Henry lll the town continues to regularly hold its famous Honey Fair and Pannier market.

Having recently constructed a high-tech honey extraction unit, the production of local honey is continuing to thrive. As part of the Tamar Grow Local cooperative, Callington has become a leader in the drive for locally sourced produce sold through established markets in the Tamar Valley. A definite winner for foodies and families alike, local eateries range from traditional pub fare, to exquisite fine dining at Langmans.

Keep your eyes peeled for the colourful murals painted across walls and buildings that depict the unique heritage of Callington and the surrounding landscape. Enveloped by Cornish farmlands, Kit Hill overlooks the town with its landmark ancient mining stack. Providing spectacular views of Bodmin Moor, this countryside park has footpaths horse riding, picnic spots. Venturing further out still will bring you to Newbridge and the fantastical woodland walks that follow the Lynher River.

Well loved by the Cornish as well as a culture packed destination for tourists, holiday cottages in Callington provide the most authentic way to experience the town while staying in a relaxed, superbly maintained environment.

This lovely traditional farmhouse has been in the same family for 3 generations, rearing beef cattle and Dorset sheep on the 130-acre farm in the heart of rural Cornwall. This holiday property is a substantial sized wing with the friendly farmer owners living next door. Built of Cornish granite, the farmhouse is over 100 years old, and has slate flagstone floor in the kitchen and a cosy log burner in the living room, with French doors that open onto the patio at the front and the extensive garden beyond. The garden is simply lovely - a wide expanse of lawn, a myriad of colour in the spring and summer owing to an abundance of flowers, with a deep pond at the far end. There is even a little boat floating on the pond. With chickens in the yard, fabulous views of Bodmin Moor, Caradon Hill and the village of Minions, lovely farm walks and woodlands to explore, this really is a delightful farm homestead just perfect for those families looking for a quiet rural location. Rilla Mill is located practically midway between the north and south Cornish coastlines, which makes exploring the county very accessible, from Bude to the renowned historic village of Tintagel on the north coast, and little fishing villages on the south coast such as Looe and Polperro. On the edge of the moor, Sterts outdoor theatre is nearby, and the historic mining area’s characteristic tall chimney stacks are still seen up on the moor. The Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty Tamar Valley has a pretty meandering estuary, which stretches from Cotehele to Calstock and onwards to the mouth of the river at Plymouth. There is so much to see and do, you may need longer than a week! Shop 4 miles, pub and restaurant 2 miles.
