Callington and the Tamar Valley

A picturesque market town steeped in history and a stone’s throw from Tamar Valley, Callington is the perfect destination for a culturally inspiring holiday.

Located in the South East of Cornwall, Callington was once a busy mining town famous for its markets and fairs. Today the area still retains that lively community spirit through unique local produce and arts projects.

At the heart of the town is the 15th century church of St Mary''s, with the original well that once supplied the town still flowing nearby. Budding historians will not be disappointed with the wealth of Celtic relics, ancient tombs and 13th century heritage. Granted a market charter in 1267 by Henry lll the town continues to regularly hold its famous Honey Fair and Pannier market.

Having recently constructed a high-tech honey extraction unit, the production of local honey is continuing to thrive. As part of the Tamar Grow Local cooperative, Callington has become a leader in the drive for locally sourced produce sold through established markets in the Tamar Valley. A definite winner for foodies and families alike, local eateries range from traditional pub fare, to exquisite fine dining at Langmans.

Keep your eyes peeled for the colourful murals painted across walls and buildings that depict the unique heritage of Callington and the surrounding landscape. Enveloped by Cornish farmlands, Kit Hill overlooks the town with its landmark ancient mining stack. Providing spectacular views of Bodmin Moor, this countryside park has footpaths horse riding, picnic spots. Venturing further out still will bring you to Newbridge and the fantastical woodland walks that follow the Lynher River.

Well loved by the Cornish as well as a culture packed destination for tourists, holiday cottages in Callington provide the most authentic way to experience the town while staying in a relaxed, superbly maintained environment.
