Also within the grounds is a detached cider barn complete with a very rare horse engine and original cider press. Colyford has a popular post office, general store and butcher which proves a great asset to the village. There are two public houses and a restaurant. The coastal resort of Seaton lies approximately 1 mile to the south and has a wide pebble beach, a small harbour at the mouth of the River Axe and direct access to the World Heritage Coast and South West Peninsular Coastal Path. The market town of Axminster lies about 5½ miles. To the east is the coastal resort of Lyme Regis and to the west are the fishing villages of Beer and Branscombe and the Regency Gothic town of Sidmouth. The county town of Exeter, 23 miles west, provides a comprehensive range of shopping facilities, theatres, and restaurants. Well worth a visit is Seaton Tramway; next to the tramway is the new Seaton Marshes Nature Reserve. The installation of a viewing hide and wheelchair-friendly paths means this beautiful area and its wildlife - wildfowl and wading birds in winter; dragonflies and butterflies in summer - are now easily accessible all year round. Dunster Castle (NT) and village, with its beautiful terraced gardens and the deer park both make interesting days out, as well as Porlock and Porlock Weir. A short distance is the pretty town of Burnham Thorpe – birthplace of Horatio Nelson and where today in the parish church the lectern is made out of timbers taken from his famous ship the Victory as well as a small exhibition on his life. Closer to home are the beaches, shops, pubs and restaurants of Thornham (1 mile).

Dawlish Warren is internationally recognised as an important ecological site. From here, gain access to the various hides dotted throughout the habitats on-site. Shaldon beach is where visitors will find some of the most spectacular coastline in South Devon. Because of its location and the way the sands have formed, it’s perfect for a number of water sports, including sailing, fishing, swimming, canoeing and rowing, Shaldon is close to attractions such as the Shaldon Wildlife Trust, Dartmoor and Haytor and Homeyards Botanical Gardens. Alternatively, visitors can challenge themselves on the Templar Way, an 18-mile walk that follows the export route for granite taken from Dartmoor, passing along the Haytor Granite tramway and the Stover Canal, before finally passing through Newton Abbot towards Teignmouth and Shaldon. There are many NT properties close by, including Agatha Christie’s summer home at Greenway. Paignton Zoo, Model Village, Cockington, Sea life Centre, Brixham, Dartmouth and Dartmoor are all close by. Exeter, with its magnificent cathedral, is a mere 20-minute drive, where visitors can browse the many shops and cafes, or take a boat trip up the river to tucked away pubs.     Located next to the famous Scarborough cricket ground, this terraced property overlooks the pitch and is perfect for a family holiday. The North Bay is just a few minutes walk away, where you’ll find a lovely large sandy beach with The Sealife Centre at the far end, and a lovely long marina towards South Bay, with the beautiful castle standing on the clifftop separating the two bays. The South Bay is more traditional with amusements, donkeys, sandcastles and a working harbour, whereas the North Bay is much quieter with traditional beach huts for hire. The walk along the sea front is a flat walk of over three miles, ideal for that evening stroll or early morning jog.
    The fantastic Peasholm Park is just down the road, where you can enjoy the boating lake and hire pedalos or rowing boats. During the summer they re-enact a naval warfare battle with miniature boats. This is a fantastic display that has proved very popular with families over the years. The largest open-air theatre in Europe is situated next to Peasholm Park, with International acts throughout the summer season. There’s plenty of restaurants, shops and bars within walking distance, and of course, the Stephen Joseph Theatre, where you can enjoy fantastic plays, home to most of Alan Aykbourn’s world premieres.
    Scarborough is a great base for exploring the North York Moors, the Wolds and the east coast; Filey, Flamborough Head and Bridlington are just a short drive away. The city of York is less than an hour’s drive with its quaint cobbled streets and excellent shopping. There’s many museums, street entertainment and theatres. The city walls form a walkway on both sides of the River Ouse, or alternatively there’s the open top tourist buses, a great way to see the city.
