Holiday cottages in England need little introduction. After all, a cottage break is really the quintessential English holiday, and we think there are few better ways to explore the wonderful history and heritage the country has to offer. London is obviously a huge draw with tourists and holidaymakers but you’re guaranteed a fantastic cosmopolitan experience in some of England’s other major cities too: Manchester, Leeds, Birmingham, York, Chester and more all offer wonderful shopping with fine dining and some justly celebrated heritage.

England’s landscape is as varied as it is beautiful, so you won’t be surprised to find it’s suitable for a wealth of different breaks. It is one of three pretty cottages nestled within the beautiful secluded woods of Peppercombe Valley.

    Dating from the late eighteenth century, to house the officers of what was then called the Preventive Service, tasked to police this wild stretch of coast to prevent smuggling. The perfect remote escape to relax and unwind at any time of year, the cottage is wonderfully snug and picturesque, and an ideal base from which to explore this breathtaking coast. The pretty shared gardens nestled within woodland are the ideal spot for a lazy breakfast and soaking up the tranquility while you plan your day.

    There is plenty for everyone, with birdwatching, fishing, riding, golf, surfing and sailing close by. There are many coastal walks to enjoy which will lead you through stunning scenery to the north and south, including the famous fishing village of Clovelly, and the more remote, Hartland Point.

    Nearby Bideford has restaurants and town amenities, along with boat trips to Lundy Island, or hire a bike and explore the nearby Tarka Trail. RHS Rosemoor Gardens, Docton Mill and Hartland Abbey are well worth a visit, along with many pretty fishing villages to explore, including nearby Instow and Appledore. The famous surfing beaches at Westward Ho and Bude are nearby, and for family fun, the Big Sheep and Milky Way Adventure Park are a must. Shop and P.O 2½ miles, pub and restaurant 1 mile.

    This delightful, Victorian terraced cottage is a couple of minutes’ walk from both Tennyson Down and Freshwater Bay, with its sweeping pebbly beach and white chalk cliffs. The property is very well presented with tastefully designed interiors and spacious, enclosed gardens to the front and rear.
    A charming entrance hall, with hanging space for coats and plenty of room for muddy walking boots, leads you in to the comfortable living/dining room with woodburner and wooden floors. From the living room you pass through the rear hall into the well equipped, fully fitted kitchen overlooking the garden. The stairs lead up from the rear hallway to three beautifully appointed bedrooms, two of which have sea views. Upstairs you will also find a spacious bathroom with a shower over the bath.
    Coastguards is ideally situated in a quiet lane and a lovely place for couples, small groups of friends or families to stay, from which to explore this beautiful island.
    This area is renowned for its spectacular walks: 4 miles west over Tennyson Down gets you to the Needles; to the east, Tennyson Trail takes you to Brook, Mottistone, Shorwell and even as far as Carisbrooke, encompassing breathtaking views, great country pubs and National Trust and English Heritage properties along the way. Compton Beach is 2 miles along the coast road. Spectacular at low tide, it is great for walks, catching the surf, building sandcastles and hunting for fossils and dinosaur footprints. The picturesque town of Yarmouth, where the ferry arrives from Lymington, is a flat 3-mile walk from the cottage along the river. Freshwater Bay was a hub for many interesting characters during Victorian times: Dimbola Lodge, the home of Julia Margaret Cameron, a world renowned photography pioneer, is at the end of the lane; a little further up the road is Tennyson’s home, Farringford.
    The island can be explored by open top bus which stops at the end of Coastguards Lane. Calbourne Mill, the only working mill on the Isle of Wight, features a small war museum, rural exhibits and a café. Chessell Pottery Barns is another attraction where you can paint your pots and enjoy lovely food.
    Outdoor pursuits are all easily accessible: Tapnell Farm is within easy reach which, as well as having a lovely restaurant, gallery, interesting animals and an indoor play area, hosts the Isle of Wight Activity Centre which can organise canoeing, coasteering and grass surfing at Freshwater Bay. Wight Cycle Hire will deliver bikes to your door and Hill Farm stables are 2 miles away. There is a stunning golf course overlooking the bay. Beach 150 yards. Shop 700 yards, pubs and restaurants within 1 mile.
