  • River Cottage

    near Langley

    Ref: CC412103
This superb renovation is part of an old silk mill situated in a lovely rural setting by the river on the western edge of the Peak District. Spacious and stylish, everything is provided to a great specification - from the glass worktops in the kitchen to the underfloor heating and en-suite wet room. Comfortable furnishings and unusual touches of decoration combine to offer a property of real character, with the benefit of a wood burner in the lounge. It has also been carefully designed to be accessible for visitors with limited mobility.

Other buildings at the silk mill have been sympathetically converted in the last ten years and featured in interior design magazines. Michael Portillo visited during the filming of his Great British Railway Journeys where he follows routes up and down the country originally suggested in an edition of George Bradshaw’s guide. The unique ’Silk Gardens’ - seven indoor themed gardens which evoke the silk route from China - can be viewed by arrangement with the owner. Visitors can also enjoy private fishing and the farm animals such as miniature horses, sheep and chickens.

Langley is a quiet village close to Macclesfield, with picturesque rows of mill worker’s cottages surrounded by spectacular countryside. Several small reservoirs, attractive woodland and ancient packhorse routes characterise the area, with good walks in Macclesfield Forest, up the peak of Shuttlingsloe and across to Tegg’s Nose Country Park. This is also a convenient place to stay to explore the attractions of the north west - Jodrell Bank Observatory, the vibrant cities of Manchester, Chester and Liverpool and historic houses such as Gawsworth Hall (with its summer open air theatre), Little Moreton Hall and Styal Mill.
