Many of Cambridgeshire’s attractions are closely linked with some of the key events in English history, so a holiday in the region allows you to engage your mind as well as relax your body to make a truly memorable break.

Access to Trinity College in Cambridge may be limited but it is open to the general public from time to time. Founded by Henry VIII, and boasting the apple tree that shared the concept of gravity with Isaac Newton, the college is one of Cambridge’s real treasures. Even if you don’t gain access the exterior architecture is more than enough reason to pay a visit.

Equally stunning displays of historical buildings can be found at King''s College Chapel. Renowned for its incredible acoustics and Gothic architecture, it’s a veritable feast for the eyes and has a most interesting past; make sure you read up before visiting!

The Imperial War Museum in Duxford is one of the most popular attractions for those with a passion for more recent history, offering a unique account of the First and Second World Wars, where you can explore the large airfield and wander amongst some of the world’s most iconic aircraft.

The city of Ely is steeped in history and is principally known for its magnificent cathedral and also the place where Oliver Cromwell resided for ten years; his house can still be viewed today.

While history plays a large part in the regions attractions the landscape itself stands out for its wealth of natural charms. If you fancy a truly relaxing day out then a punt down the River Cam is one of the best ways to get a feel for the place.

Due to a naturally low-lying geography a holiday in Cambridgeshire is well suited to those who want to get out and about without taxing themselves too much.     At its heart lies Rutland Water, which attracts visitors worldwide for bird watching, fishing and water sports. There is an abundance of excellent walks found locally with the Jurassic, Viking and Macmillan Ways to explore. A pleasant way to spend an afternoon is to browse around Barnsdale Gardens, designed by the late Geoff Hamilton.
    The area is full of historic towns such as Stamford, 5 miles, which has been given conservation status. Once an important wool town, it has retained much of its old world charm and prosperity. Several of the buildings are of old Lincolnshire limestone, giving the town a fine appearance. There is much of interest in Stamford, including the Meadows (a pleasant place to picnic), All Saints’ Church and the picturesque Barn Hill behind it, as well as All Saints’ Brewery and Stamford Arts Centre, which has one of England’s earliest provincial theatres. Other towns of interest are Melton Mowbray, Oakham and Uppingham. Peterborough is 11 miles offers many amenities, including its magnificent cathedral. There are also many shops, restaurants and bars as well as theatres, cinema and greyhound stadium.
    Pretty villages with country inns serving real ale and excellent food can be found within a pleasant drive and make the perfect place in which to unwind after a day’s sightseeing. Shop and pub 1 mile.

Ely is 6 miles in the other direction with its 12th-century cathedral and range of interesting shops and restaurants. National Trust properties can be found at Wicken Fen
    (5 miles), an ideal place to explore fen landscapes and Anglesey Abbey and gardens. A day at the races in Newmarket (14 miles) is a possibility, or pay a visit to the National Horse Racing Museum in the town. An added bonus for steam enthusiasts staying at Chittering Farm is the Stretham Old Engine which is located on the edge of the farm; erected in 1831 this is one of the earliest examples of a land drainage steam engine. There is also the opportunity to experience wakeboarding, with tuition, on the farm reservior (by arrangement with the owners). Shop 2 miles, pub 1 mile.
