The cottage was lovely, clean and well furnished however it was far from everywhere. No shops for miles and there was no Wi-fi connection. Furthermore there were some issues with the toilet upstairs on the landing: instead of a ceiling light there was a torch, the pressure to flush the toilet was very poor and therefore it did not flush properly at times and the toilet seat kept coming off. The boiler for the water and central heating was very flimsy and probably needed replacing with a knob missing which had been removed intentionally by the owner so that people would not use it all night. The instructions were very vague and confusing therefore making it difficult to operate but we had hot water and heat. The vacuum was falling apart. Above all it was the attitude of the owner who was very abrupt! We were told off like small children because we left at 10.30am instead of 10.00am on day of departure. Owner very unpleasant!

Response on behalf of the Owner; Thank you for your comments. The shops are approximately 4 miles from the cottage as is stated within the property description. There is no Wi-Fi connection, which many guests have reported as being a benefit of ‘getting away from it all’. Nor do we advertise that there is one. There is an issue with the main light in the cloakroom toilet upstairs. It has been extremely rare that the spot lights have needed changing in five years. There has always been great difficulty in changing the bulbs in this light with no success this time. An electrician has been consulted about a replacement ceiling light. The toilet is working fine. Due to slightly less pressure being upstairs and a very old property, pressing the flush button for a few extra seconds than the usual, will successfully flush this toilet. The toilet seat was not broken prior to this guest’s arrival. There are 3 toilets in Woodend Cottage; there is another cloakroom toilet and the one in the main bathroom. The boiler for the heating is in good working order and is 9 years old. It was made very clear how to operate the system in a detailed e mail. There are also clear instructions in the ‘House Book’ in the lounge which is left out for every customer to read. It is simply an on /off / timed switch which is clearly seen. We have not had any previous complaints. There is no need to tamper with other controls within the boiler as this can cause unnecessary damage as was done so in this case, which unfortunately was expensive and the property was left with no heating and hot water when there were more guests due to arrive that same day. It was found that the heating had been left on constantly and the temperature turned up to the maximum therefore shutting the system down as it could not cope with this. Controls have not been removed to stop the heating being used overnight. I have no control of the heating when not there. The vacuum has a small piece of plastic missing which was broken previously but it is still in full working order. The departure time of 10am is made clear to all guests and it is within the booking conditions. This is for the cleaners to gain entry to prepare for the next guests arriving on the same day. I received a phone call from the cleaner that day to report that this guest was just out of bed at 10.45am when they arrived at the property and could not gain entry. The cleaner had to make a double journey that day which then incurred additional costs. I therefore sent a simple text message to this guest as a gentle reminder that they should have departed by 10am.
