Northumbrian Cottages

The Northumberland Regional Specialist - Fantastic properties in the most favourable locations. No one knows Northumberland better!

Description

A former shepherd’s cottage, renovated to a good standard with lots of character, makes an ideal touring base.

Oak Cottage is full of character with its beamed living room and four poster bed. Relax amid spectacular and dramatic scenery in this gloriously unspoilt part of Northumberland. Lying within the Northumberland National Park and enjoying panoramic views over Whitelee Fell National Nature Reserve, the cottages are former shepherd’s cottages on the owner’s sheep farm, renovated to a very good standard and retaining lots of character. Oak Cottage and Birch Cottage have beamed living room ceilings and all three have inglenook fireplaces with multi-fuel stoves for a warm and cosy atmosphere as well as power showers in the bathroom. There are wildlife cameras which feed live pictures direct to the flatscreen TV in each cottage, so you can watch barn owls, badgers and other wildlife. The area is rich in wildlife and ideal for walkers. Whitelee Farm is an idyllic base for exploring the Roman wall, Lindisfarne, Alnwick Castle, Kielder Forest Park and the Scottish borders. Newcastle and Edinburgh are within an easy drive. Shopping in Otterburn and Jedburgh, both 15 minutes away.
Oak Cottage can be booked together with Birch Cottage (15841) and Rowan Cottage (80119) to accommodate up to 13 people.

The cottage was in a stunning located, although remote. The owners couldn't do enough for us and were very friendly and helpful and couldn't do enough to make our stay at Oak Cottage very comfortable. Although the cottage was comfortable, clean and very warm, we felt it was a little dated and smelt of damp, it could do with updating which would make it a truly stunning characterful cottage. Saying that, it wouldn't put us off returning in the summer.

We unfortunately had to spend the first two hours cleaning the kitchen so that we could put food away in the fridge and cupboards, we had to clean the dining room and wipe down coffee table etc in the living room, before we could even "move in". We had to put all the crockery in the dishwasher before we could use it. The garden does not look like the one in the picture - it was so overgrown it was not possible to sit in the garden, unlike the gardens of the other two cottages on the site!? The property however was in the most perfect setting and the holiday was not spoilt by the rather unfortunate start. The area is stunning and the hosts were really friendly, helpful and left a bottle of wine for us on our arrival. However my experience of booking this cottage through Cottages for You was an even worse experience. A formal complaint will be following.
