English Country Cottages

An inspiring collection of properties chosen for their character, luxury and heritage, all graded 4 star and above.

With a view over a secluded valley, this cottage is just 8 miles from Woolacombe’s long sandy beach.

Overlooking a secluded valley, just 8 miles from Woolacombe’s long sandy beach, these three superb holiday properties each enjoy their own enclosed garden area, and are peacefully set down a mile long made-up private road. Close to the owner’s home, they have been imaginatively and beautifully converted from former farm buildings, incorporating glass frontages to take advantage of the lovely views over the stream-bordered paddocks which lead to beautiful woodland walks. Children love getting to know the bunch of friendly animals, which include miniature ponies and donkeys, llamas, pet sheep and small flock of traditional breed hens.
Perfect for a relaxing holiday, the area holds a wealth of attractions. The ancient town of Barnstaple, with its Domesday associations, lies just 5 miles distant. Here the visitor can find a good selection of shops, restaurants, museums, a theatre and various sporting facilities, not to mention a 14th-century parish church, a fascinating Heritage Centre and a daily Pannier Market. For watersports enthusiasts, the beautiful beaches at Woolacombe, Croyde Bay and Saunton Sands are a must, affording some of the finest windsurfing in Devon, as well as being a haven for sunbathers and sandcastle builders. Wonderful walking and riding can be enjoyed in the nearby Exmoor National Park (6 miles), where red deer roam the rugged moors and magnificent sea views can be admired from lofty cliffs and headlands.
Among the many places to visit within a 5 mile radius are Arlington Court (NT), with its collection of model ships and Victorian accessories, and Marwood Hill Gardens, complete with its string of lakes, rare shrubs and exotic trees. The resorts of Ilfracombe, Combe Martin, Lynton and Lynmouth are also easily accessible, each offering its own blend of seaside charm. Golf and sailing, 8 miles. Shops 5 miles, pub 3 miles.

This exceptionally spacious barn conversion features a large living room with impressive wooden staircase to galleried landing and French door to patio and garden. Double doors leading to spacious dining room. Well-equipped farmhouse-style kitchen with stable door to garden. Utility with toilet. Double bedroom with en-suite bathroom, over-bath shower and toilet. First floor: Double bedroom with en-suite bathroom and toilet. Twin bedroom with en-suite shower room and toilet. Had a wonderful time here. So relaxing. Accommodation was exceptional. Beautifully decorated and spotlessly clean. Owners so welcoming. It was a sheer delight. Will definitely be going back. Cannot recommend enough.

As last year we all had a most enjoyable week. The Barn was immaculate, lovely kitchen with all equipment in good working order. Bedrooms comfortable with good en-suite facilities for each room. Lovely welcome with freshly baked scones on arrival. Owner was pleased for my young grandsons to assist with feeding chickens, ponies.

We had a marvellous holiday, helped along enormously by the very comfortable, well equipped house, with plenty of room for all 6 of us. The house is spacious, immaculately clean and well presented, and it was a pleasure to spend time there. On the odd rainy day, we were very happy to stay in the house, playing boardgames, cooking, watching TV and spending family time together. The owners, Susanne and Ken, were so welcoming, and had even left us some homemade scones with cream and jam, and a bottle of wine to greet us on arrival. The children loved spending time with and helping care for the animals - it made their holiday! The house's location is superb - the long, private drive meant that peace and quiet was ensured, and yet we were very close to Woolacombe beach, and a large supermarket in Barnstaple. Thank you, Susanne and Ken, for such a marvellous time. Your kindness and patience with the children is much appreciated, and you popping round to collect them each evening to help put the animals to bed was the highlight of every day for them. We can't wait to come back - see you in 2018!

Stayed for the weekend with friends (4 adults, 4 children) and the Wheelhouse was great. Exceptionally spacious and well equipped. The children loved the animals on the farm. Everyone was sad to leave - wished we'd been staying for a week as there was so much still to do in the local area.

We were wowed by the arrival touches such as the cream tea, fresh eggs, fresh flowers, wine and chocolates. We loved the décor in the bedrooms and the dining room and Portmerion china were stunning. We loved the books, dvds and animals too. The location was perfect for us and Tesco within 10 mins very handy. We had a wonderful time. Larger pots and pans, more baking trays, teaspoons and a bigger fridge would have made life easier for our party. A nespresso/tassimo machine would have been the icing on the cake. Thank you for a wonderful week. We plan to come back!

Lovely home which is clean, well looked after and very spacious with plenty of seating for everyone staying. We enjoyed the fact it had a lovely kitchen table in the large kitchen, a separate dining room and lounge so as a party of 6 adults, we were able to find our own space when we needed to. We went there for the week over Christmas and the house had been beautifully decorated and lovely fresh scones and Devon cream were waiting for us on arrival. There are beautiful walks and villages within a 20 minute drive but no local pubs or newsagents to walk to from the house, it is a bit remote in that respect. The only gripe we would have with the property is that the beds are very uncomfortable otherwise it is a lovely place to stay and we would consider it again.

    Response from:

Response on behalf of the owner; Many thanks for your very positive feedback regarding your stay at Wheelhouse. In connection with your negative comments I would inform you that the website description very clearly states pub 3 miles and shops 5 miles distant. I am very sorry that you found the beds uncomfortable but I do have a recent entry in the visitors' book which reads 'lovely comfy beds', so I have to conclude that comfort is very subjective.
