English Country Cottages

From a touch of luxury to characterful heritage, experience one of our truly inspiring holiday properties.

Screened by mature woodland in a secluded estate with wonderful walks from the door. A home from home close to the Northumberland coastline.

This beautiful country estate offers the perfect ‘home-away-from-home’ in England’s most rural county. Each pretty cottage and private garden is out of sight of any other property. Close to Northumberland’s Heritage coast, these secluded cottages have been renovated throughout to provide cosy interiors with wood-burning stoves - perfect for warm winter breaks. Farm Cottage (ref MMX) boasts its own gin-gang, a circular outbuilding once used as a mule-driven mill. Over the bridge lies Garden Cottage (ref MMW) set inside the old walled garden. These two cottages are located in a tranquil pocket of beautiful rolling countryside, under vast skies where the sun rises over beaches and sets onto the moorland of the Cheviots. Additionally, West Lodge (ref MMV) is a single-storey cottage nestling behind beautiful stone pillars at the entrance to the estate, screened by mature woodland and handily placed for touring just 100 yards from the single-carriageway A1. An ideal country retreat, just 3 miles from sparkling white sandy beaches and close to Northumberland’s magnificent castles. Charlton Hall’s ancient parkland makes for perfect scenic walks. Guests can stroll along the Shippton Burn, which runs under stone bridges, filling the trout lake before meandering to the sea. They can also explore woodland bursting with bluebells and wild flowers in spring and summer; and see nesting buzzards, roe deer, foxes, badgers, hares and weasels – all abundant here due to careful environmental management. A cross country course takes guests who wish to bring their horses through woods and fields. The nearby beaches are also excellent for riding and dog walking. Local attractions include Holy Island, the Farne Islands, historic Berwick-upon-Tweed, Alnwick Castle and Garden, the Heritage coastline and castles. Newcastle-upon-Tyne and Edinburgh are just 1 hour by train. Guests arriving by air met at Newcastle Airport (40 minutes by road) by arrangement. Shops 6 miles.

Step down to warm and spacious living room with wood-burning stove. Beamed farmhouse-style kitchen/dining room with views over paddock and garden. Spacious double bedroom with 6ft bed and additional single bed (for +1). Bathroom with over-bath shower and toilet.

The standard of decor was disappointing. The dining chairs were rickety and needed the joints glueing. There was very little worktop space in the kitchen and I bumped my head on the plate rack when putting things in the cupboard. The garden was neglected although the grass was cut whilst we were there. The storage heater controls were broken and one of them the switch at the socket was broken so could not be turned off. There was a split in the leather on the sofa. The brochure description states that "you can stroll by the stream" but all the grounds were overgrown with weeds and the only place to walk was in the fields where there were sheep so we were not able to let the dogs off the lead. It would have helped if there had been some signage to indicate where you could walk. The dustbin was half full when we arrived and was supposed to be emptied on Wednesday but this didn't happen. On the plus side the bathroom was good and there was plenty of hot water. The large flat screen television was great but these days Wifi should be available. I think that it was quite expensive for what it was.

iT IS A LOVELY COTTAGE FULL OF CHARACTER. Loved the shutters. Great that the garden is in two sectors and we could segregate the dog and it's enclosed. However, we did feel it could be made even more special with just a few extras e.g.Wi-Fi and a working dishwasher ( we are on holiday), the outside needs a paint as the windows are lovely it would be a shame to lose them through neglect. Some people complained about the noise from the A1. I live in a very quiet location so although I heard the cars they were not a problem but if people thought it might be they should hire 'Garden cottage'in the same estae as that was in the middle of the estate and very quiet.
