English Country Cottages

An inspiring collection of properties chosen for their character, luxury and heritage, all graded 4 star and above.

Well Cottage is a charming property as it sits above Castle Combe and offers a romantic getaway or even a family retreat.

This charming 16th century cottage hides a contemporary interior, that complements the original beams and inglenook fireplace. Located down a tranquil private country lane, Well Cottage is perfect for that romantic retreat or family break.
The beamed living room has large comfortable sofas, mountains of cushions to snuggle down in front of the large wood burning stove in original stone inglenook fireplace. It is the perfect place to relax of an evening cosy and warm, to watch the flat screen TV, or enjoy a quiet morning coffee.
The country kitchen with its beams, stone floor and exposed brick is ideal for enjoying a leisurely breakfast at the farmhouse table. Or a convivial evening meal with family discussing the events of the day, and planning for tomorrow.
Take the traditional narrow, turning stairs to the first floor, where you will find the lovely peaceful bedrooms. Both have iron bedsteads in keeping with the character of the cottage, and both have beams and sloping ceilings. Well-appointed with generous duvets, fluffy pillows and immaculate linen they are just what the doctor ordered for a good night sleep.
Relax in the large enclosed garden with its original covered well, and soak up the sun, while enjoying a well-deserved drink at the end of the day. Or for walking enthusiasts, take the footpath from the door to the heart of Castle Combe with its typical honey coloured Cotswolds houses. Golf and horse riding nearby, and there is a country hotel for bar and meals within 2 to 3 minute walk. Shop ½ mile.

Two steps to entrance. Beamed living room with wood-burning stove in inglenook and sofa-bed (for +2). Large kitchen/dining area with tiled floor. First floor: Two double bedrooms, each with iron bedstead and beamed, sloping ceilings, one with small step to entrance. Bathroom with shower attachment. Shower room with toilet.

The cottage was presented beautifully, with the surprise of a arrival hamper filled with lots of goodies. Loved the cottage and location, would stay again! The dog also enjoyed his stay.

Perfect cottage, but best for max 4 people, as there are only 2 bedrooms available

Beautiful cottage. Lovely area. Nice neighbours The cottage is gorgeous. Nicely decorated and a new carpet. A hamper was left for us (which included jelly babies - which was inspired) and two bottles of wine. Lovely. However - the thermostat on the boiler is broken so virtually boiling water came out of the taps. One small loo roll per bathroom is just not enough, so we had to buy more as we were staying all week. Ditto only three dishwasher tabs. The shower had mouldy grouting and the ceiling above the shower was mouldy too. One loo was really stained due to a faulty cistern and neither loos flushed properly.

Lovely cottage in fabulous village. Being close to the race track wasn't ideal but didn't make too much of an impact. Thank you for our stay

This is a warm (even pretty hot) cottage as unfortunately it appeared that the thermostat was set to quite a high temperature which we couldn't control and the time settings were strange and unwelcome to say the least. The heat wasn't on when you got up in the morning, probably because it hadn't gone off until the early hours of the morning (i.e. something like 3 or 4am) so sleeping was tricky as the bedrooms were too hot even with a window open from early evening. The lounge area was comfortable, as were the beds although the fitted sheets are not deep enough so ride up completely in the night rucking up under you so they need replacing with deeper fitted sheets please and great to have a good kitchen space when all too often there is insufficient worktop to allow easy preparation of meals. However there are lots of little areas which have scope for/require improvement - most of the kitchen utensils are plastic and have degraded (probably from constant dishwasher cleansing) so are not easy to use as they bend when trying to scoop out heavier food, there is no knife sharpener (or pizza cutter which would be handy at times), the pasta bowls are well crazed/cracked and need replacing, there are insufficient sizes/shapes of baking dishes i.e. a lasagne type dish would be perfect for lots of different meals e.g. cottage pie, lasagne, etc, the condiment sets were not great (empty mill) and you wouldn't expect to have to take salt, pepper or cooking oil with you. We bought all our groceries with us and then couldn't have breakfast the following morning as we discovered there was no cooking oil in the cottage! There was no hand towel in the kitchen so we had to use one of the small bathroom towels, but there were 2 tea towels even though I guess most people use the dishwasher. The cooker hood filter was disgusting and is long overdue a replacement and it would not break the bank to put a spare toilet roll in each bathroom when it cottage is occupied for a week as we had to go and buy some. There are no user instructions for the heating, dishwasher (broken button inside machine but enough washing tablets provided, although we don't have a machine at home so I have no idea what the cycles mean, if I used the correct one and it didn't actually wash the pots that well either so if you didn't rinse them really well before putting them into the machine then you would have to do it by hand after the cycle ended), cooker and washer/dryer (never used a combined machine so hadn't realised that it had previously been set to dry at the end of the wash and was waiting ages for it to end - over 3 hours - and wouldn't have put some items in that wash as they were meant to be tumble dried!). It would also be nice to have a clothes line in the back garden (to use the few pegs that are in a kitchen drawer) and an indoors airer for those items that can't be tumble dried. Lastly there was no recycling information, in fact hardly any info for the cottage whatsoever in the so called 'welcome pack'. It appears there is no recycling bin for this cottage, although all around have one and they have broken the box for recycling glass bottles - was that why the bin men didn't take it or because we didn't put it out front on the correct day/time (not that we would know when that is of course as there are no instructions/info)? We ended up binning what we would normally recycle and weren't happy about having to do so, and don't imagine the council/environment would be either! Having said all of the above, the cottage was comfortable, if overly hot at times, and an ideal base for exploring that part of Wiltshire as the location was easy to get to from a main road and nice being on the edge of countryside for walks, especially into the olde worlde quaint Coombe village where there are some nice pub/hotel restaurants and tea rooms. Lots of history so great for film making! It is pretty dark at night though due to no street lights so do take a torch if you are planning on walking.
