Walker’s Neuk is an immaculately presented, ground floor cottage apartment situated in the charming fishing village of Anstruther. Renovated to a very good standard and thoughtfully furnished for comfort and ease, it creates a wonderful atmosphere for a relaxing holiday. This is just the ticket for exploring the cobbled streets, little alleyways and working fishing harbour, where you can watch the fishermen land their catch. Award-winning fish and chip shops, restaurants, cafés, bars, local shops and galleries are all within a few minutes’ walk, or take a boat trip to the Isle of May and visit the world-renowned bird sanctuary and nature reserve, famous for puffins, grey seals and other wildlife. Enjoy leisurely walks along the Fife Coastal Path, which runs through the village, and visit historic castles, pretty fishing villages and many beautiful beaches and coves. The area is famous for golf courses, with a challenging 9-hole course along the shore and many links courses in the surrounding areas. The sunny back garden is set over two levels and is shared with the upper apartment. It is the perfect place from which to relax after a day exploring the area. From the upper level garden you can enjoy beautiful sea views of the Bass Rock and over the Firth of Forth towards North Berwick, or on cooler days, curl up in front of the wood-burning stove with a glass of wine.
The land at East Green in Anstruther was originally common ground, but in 1221 the Balmerino Monks were granted the right to pasture four cows and one horse. The monks businesses grew and small workshops were soon built to facilitate this. Walker’s Neuk was built in front of the site of their workshops in the 18th century, and workshop chimneys still jut out from one of the walls in the secluded gardens. Walker’s Neuk used to house the local blacksmith, whose brass founding facilities were kept busy making horseshoes for the horses that were working just along the road at the old gasworks. The upper apartment still has the iron bar on display where the forge door used to hang. Across the road is the birthplace of Andrew Waid, a local benefactor whose legacy is the foundation of the local secondary school in 1886. During the 1730s and 1780s the British Government received grants to set up whaling ports, some of this money came to Anstruther and in a land between Waid’s home and Hadfoot Wynd, a boiling house was erected. Two whalers called ’The Rising Star’ and ’Hawk’ worked for the company. Unfortunately, Anstruther could not compete with the other two main whaling ports on the east coast of Scotland, and the company dissolved leaving behind the legacy of Whale Close. The site of the boiling houses is now home to The Fisheries Museum. St Andrews is 9 miles away, and Edinburgh, Stirling, Perth and Gleneagles are all within an hour’s drive. Beach 200 yards. Shop and pub 200 yards, Michelin star rated restaurant 100 yards.

    Lovely, well appointed , centrally located accommodation. Great location for seeing the local area with easy walks and lot's of good places to eat.Dog friendly.

    We had a lovely stay over Christmas. perfect location. Walking distance to great pubs & restaurants. Most Dog friendly. Kitchen is well equipped and large fridge / freezer. Outdoor space at the back of the property is really lovely although shared, Didn't manage to utilise it fully with it being cold! Parking was never a problem. Enjoyed the surrounding towns St Andrews was lovely and great walks on the beach. Would love to return in summer. One small problem really struggled with the wood burner. The owner was on hand for advise.

    Unfortunately the first night was ruined by the fire alarm going off at 4.30am. There has previously been a fire in the property and as a result several alarms fitted throughout which prevent you from lighting candles or enjoying the log burner. We did light this but had to keep the windows and door open. The cottage being historic, ground floor and by the coast suffers from damp which may be helped if a dehumidifier is fitted. The location however is excellent with a great restaurant directly opposite.

    Response on behalf of the owner; In reply to the above review, I would like to confirm there has never been a fire in Walker’s Neuk. Before advertising Walkers Neuk as a holiday property it was subjected to rigorous legal Fire & Safety inspections to ensure guest personal safety is paramount at all times. As a responsible property owner I have fitted the level of alarms legally required in a property the size of Walkers with gas central heating and a log burner. During this guest’s stay the smoke alarm did go off at 4.30 in the morning, the guests phoned me right away and I resolved it immediately. All the alarms were inspected later in the morning and no defect was found with any of the alarms.

    Very tastefully furnished. Excellent location 3 minutes to the beach, award winning chippie and local pubs. Nice enclosed rear garden. Thoroughly recommended.

    A lovely, really spacious cottage equipped with everything you could possibly need. The location is perfect for pubs, restaurants, shops and walks along the coastal path.

    Wonderful location right in the heart of the town with easy access to the local bus service and the local supermarket. Especially appreciated the sunny enclosed garden and the closeness of the local park for the dog, also the good kitchen eqipment and good shower. Only downside was that the bathroom is off the kitchen, so is a long way from the bedroom.

    The garden was NOT enclosed as stated on the web site and was used by a huge cat. we could not let our dog wander free as she is used to at home. We only ever go to places which as enclosed gardens, also parking was a nightmare. Bathroom needs a bit of attention!! The window in the sitting room only opened about 2 inches and the one in the bedroom did not open at all. Would definitely not return or recommend to anyone

    Response on behalf of the Owner; I was really upset to see this guest’s experience of Walkers Neuk was not one similar to my other guests. My guest’s holiday experience is extremely important to me and I strive to provide a high standard of accommodation to make sure my guests stay is one that is enjoyed and very often repeated, something that is strongly reflected in the comments previously posted. In addition to being upset with the feedback I am also very surprised, as I actually visited these guests to make sure everything was ok and they gave me absolutely no indication of the issues mentioned above. The garden at Walkers Neuk is as described on the website ‘set over 2 levels and shared with upper apartment’. The garden shown on the website is the garden level viewed directly from the kitchen and accessible straight from the back door. The only exit from this part of the garden is a space the width of a door that provides access to the next level (still within the confines of the enclosed garden) which is detailed on the website also highlighting that some of the steps are uneven. All dog friendly cottages advertised on this website are supplied with a handout for guests advising that pets should be supervised at all times when in the garden, this information has been included within the Welcome Manual. The on street parking which is I have no control over again is clearly documented in the description. The bath was completely re-grouted earlier this year and all previous guest comments detail how clean, comfortable and well equipped this apartment is. The windows in both the bedroom and living room have security locks, allowing each window to open approximately 2-3 inches for air flow, all windows in the kitchen and bathroom open wide to enhance air flow within the apartment. Again I am really disappointed this guest was unhappy with their stay and I will continue to work towards providing positive experiences for my guests.

    Walkers Neuk is a fantastic venue to enjoy Anstruther and the rest of Fife. 2 minutes walk from the harbour, the pub, the chippy, the Michelin Starred restaurant and right the the Fife Coastal trail it couldn't be in a better spot. But it was the cottage itself that was the real star. Immaculately clean, tastefully furnished to a high spec it really was a home from home. Oh and the bed, it's HUGE!!! Can't speak highly enough of everything we encountered during our stay. Highly Highly Recommend!!!
