Turpin’s Cottage overlooks a wooded dell, and adjoins a play field, Belper is close by and Bakewell a short drive.

This imposing 19th century building was originally the coach house and stables for the nearby ‘Owl Coaching Inn’ (reputedly a haunt of highwayman Dick Turpin), that’s now a farm some 2 miles from the historic Derwent Valley mill town of Belper. The building has been most sympathetically converted and retains hand-cut lintels, vaulted coach-ways on the exterior, and superb barrel-vaulted ceilings, all emphasise the historical importance of this Grade II-listed structure. The original arched coach entrances now have French windows that open onto flag stone terraced areas. Turpin’s Cottage, in the grounds of the farm with another property, overlooks a wooded dell, and adjoins a 2-acre paddock and a play field with ample parking. Belper’s formal river gardens, visitor centre, and historical mills, now a World Heritage site, are within 2 miles. Chatsworth House, Haddon Hall, Matlock and Matlock Bath, and the popular market town of Bakewell, are all a short drive away. Shops and pubs 2 miles.

Cottage was just right for us but bearing in mind there were 11 adults and 5 youngsters using worn out frying pans was very difficult at breakfast time. A couple of the kitchen drawers need attention and several light bulbs need replacing as no spares available. It would also be helpful to have an information pack available that includes local facilities, doctors, dentists, nearest supermarkets etc, and easier instructions regarding the hot water and heating system. Overall we had a great time and the pool table was an added bonus.

Overall a great property for large groups. Nice bedrooms and living space. Only slight downside was that nothing was provided, no washing up liquid or bin bags or anything like that which would have been helpful.

Great accommodation for a family reunion. Beautiful old building with lovely grounds. Good heating (important for old buildings!). And comes with a pool table! My only complaint would be the mattress I slept on, which reminded me of my time as a student!

The cottgae is very spacious and the layout of bedrooms and bathrooms and additional seating is good. There are plenty of seats, tables, plates, dishes and cultlery. One of the ovens did not heat up . The other appliances worked well. However, 2 of the bedrooms do not have a proper window, (not stated in the description) as there are un-openable shutters over them. The location is very convenient, but the cottage is on a busy corner (not noted in ad) and traffic noise is sometimes disturbing at night. There is plenty of parking and walks are avilable in the area, even from the door. Nearest supermarket is close by in Belper. We thought it was expensive especially as electricity is extra.

The space in the house and layout are brilliant for groups of families as everyone seems to have a double, a twin and a bathroom to themselves, but the beds and kitchen let the house down. Almost everyone in our group complained that the springs in the mattress were digging into them, the beds were desperately uncomfortable. The hobs in the kitchen were a bit like holding a match under a pan of rice. It got there in the end, but we're glad we took large pots of food cooked at home. Everything else was good and it was cheap, so maybe you get what you pay for.

Nice house with everything we needed for a great family holiday. Dishwasher top rack broken and kept falling out. Kitchen utensils drawer base loose and utensils fell out.
