Description

Turpin’s Cottage overlooks a wooded dell, and adjoins a play field, Belper is close by and Bakewell a short drive.

This imposing 19th century building was originally the coach house and stables for the nearby ‘Owl Coaching Inn’ (reputedly a haunt of highwayman Dick Turpin), that’s now a farm some 2 miles from the historic Derwent Valley mill town of Belper. The building has been most sympathetically converted and retains hand-cut lintels, vaulted coach-ways on the exterior, and superb barrel-vaulted ceilings, all emphasise the historical importance of this Grade II-listed structure. The original arched coach entrances now have French windows that open onto flag stone terraced areas. Turpin’s Cottage, in the grounds of the farm with another property, overlooks a wooded dell, and adjoins a 2-acre paddock and a play field with ample parking. Belper’s formal river gardens, visitor centre, and historical mills, now a World Heritage site, are within 2 miles. Chatsworth House, Haddon Hall, Matlock and Matlock Bath, and the popular market town of Bakewell, are all a short drive away. Shops and pubs 2 miles.

Turpin cottage for 20 people of varying age is perfect. We spent last weekend here for a family get together to celebrate an early xmas! Plenty of comfortable bedrooms and an abundance of bathrooms and toilets. Beautiful location and sunday was spent at Belper xmas food market, a short walk away.

This would be a great Cottage for a large group if the landlord updated old unsuitable equipment. The kitchen and contents need replacing. Drawers couldn't be closed once opened as were broken, saucepans were disgusting. The kitchen is tiny, has little work surface and was dark due to dud light bulbs which we replaced. One shower was ineffective so 5 people staying in that area had to go elsewhere in the house to shower.

Only one main door key worked out of two supplied, key from ground floor bedroom only worked from inside, loose handle on pan dangerous, dishwasher not very efficient, no instructions where local doctors, hospital, vets etc.,cooker knob markings worn away.

Fantastic cottage for a big group of people. Cottage is very close to the main road but the garden at the bottom of the steps makes up for it.
