Description

Relax in the lovely Victorian walled garden, enjoy a game of croquet or simply sit and take in the ever changing plants, trees and shrubs.

The properties are peacefully located in a superb scenic area near to the delightful village of Droxford, which sits in the beautiful Meon Valley and the South Downs National Park. These three carefully converted single storey properties (refs UKC2760, UKC2761 and UKC2762) have been thoughtfully and tastefully styled throughout. Each property has a wood burner, and a super kingsize Hypnos bed, which can be separated to make twin beds. There is a shared bike/boot store/utility room, private parking for 2 cars per property, and an enclosed patio and lawned garden area. Guests have the added benefit of enjoying the superb Victorian walled garden adjacent. Here you can spend time meandering and savour the beautiful landscaped gardens with croquet lawn, seating areas and ever changing plants, shrubs and trees through the seasons. For those wishing to enjoy calm and serenity this makes the perfect retreat. There is also a livery opposite which guests are welcome to use by prior arrangement with the owner.
Both Garden Cottage and Stable Cottage have superb far reaching views over countryside where sheep, deer, various birds (including buzzards, pheasant and owls), can be observed, and all three barn conversions have access to superb walks less than two minutes from the door! The disused Meon Valley railway line is 11 miles long, ideal for walking, cycling and horse riding. There is easy access onto this and the properties are set approximately half way between Wickham and West Meon. The Wayfarers Walk can also be joined at Chalk Hill, Soberton. This a 71-mile trail runs from Inkpen Beacon in the north of the county to the sea at Emsworth. There are also easy links to the South Downs National Park and also nearby is Bere Forest, a 100-acre woodland area with walks and play areas. The River Meon is close by and is ideal for trout fishing and there are various golf clubs within the area. There is a lovely country pub just 550 yards from the properties, and many other popular pubs and inns within a 5 mile radius. There is a lovely historic church adjacent to the pub. West Meon is about a 5-minute drive, with pubs serving great food and where the founder of Lords cricket rests. Wickham and Bishops Waltham are about 6 miles away, with an array of independent shops, cafés, pubs and restaurants. Places to visit within easy reach include Winchester cathedral, the New Forest, Chichester and beaches at Hayling Island. Portsmouth with the Spinnaker Tower, waterside dining, museums, art galleries, theatre, retail shopping designer outlets and day trips to the Isle of Wight, all within a 30-minute drive. There is a golf course 2 miles away, and fishing, walking, birdwatching riding and cycling are all close by – making this the ideal choice for those who enjoy the outdoors. Beach 12 miles. Shop 1 mile, pub and restaurant 550 yards.

That being said…. wow! This small site has just shot straight to the top of the list for a revisit. ***Before we begin –As at March 2018, do not use Google Maps to assess the property – it has been extensively renovated and this isn’t reflected in the satellite image*** Let’s start with accessibility. Head south to Winchester on the A34, turn left, 20 minutes of countryside and you’re there. It doesn’t really get a lot simpler than that. As for the location; blimey, it’s gorgeous! Think atypical country village with pretty little church and cracking county pub. No streetlights, no pavements, hardly any people and, most importantly, no noise! The peace and quiet is almost deafening, punctuated infrequently by a passing Landrover or “squark” of local wildlife. What about the accommodation? Well, it’s been done well. Really well! When you come on these cottage holidays, you have to, at times, expect a level of “rustic charm”. Not here, while the outside is pure countryside, the inside is akin to a new build show home. Everything you want, everything you need, is right here already. The living area is comfortable; small but without being cramped. The bedroom is huge, and the bed is incredible… and bigger than my car! The bathroom is SO well finished and so impressive, that my wife is already starting to look at gutting our bathroom at home. All in all, this little cabin has been finished to an incredible standard and hasn’t missed a thing! Now, the most important part of the review – the Springer Spaniel perspective. Many places say “dog friendly”, by which they mean they’ll allow dogs. This place is different; they WELCOME dogs. You arrive to dog bowls and poo bags ready and waiting after the drive. The owner has acknowledged that most Spaniels can’t read and don’t care much for the “stay off the sofa” rules. The best owners in the world will turn their back occasionally, so they’ve got you covered and have provided throws to protect the furniture…just in case. The little garden area is secure enough, with a (at its lowest) waist high fence. Beyond the digs, the very pretty, disused railway is a 10 minute walk from the cabin (you’ll need a short lead as this is accessed by a fairly narrow road). The local pub accepts dogs and we all had a cracking meal in the bar one evening. Finally, the owner – Gill was friendly, warm and welcoming. You can see the love that’s been poured into this location everywhere you look. The walled garden was beautiful, and that’s in March. By the middle of summer, it’ll be exquisite. While you only see Gill very briefly here and there, she certainly adds a finishing touch to a brilliant place! What’s the conclusion then? Should I visit this place? Were you not reading what I wrote above? Of course you should! Take a really comfy hotel suite… plonk it in the Hampshire countryside…. Add your dogs… and you’ve got Garden Cottage.
