Description

Providing very attractive large garden, this lovely thatched cottage retains original features and is filled with comfort.

Standing detached in a very attractive large garden, this lovely thatched cottage dates back 400 years and offers spacious accommodation. Beautifully restored, the holiday cottage has retained many character features including beams and inglenooks, together with every modern day comfort and convenience. The location is ideal for touring and exploring (being close yet set back from a main road), and is positioned on The Ridgeway National Trail, accessing many wonderful tranquil miles of byways and footpaths across the Marlborough Downs and beyond. The pretty market town of Marlborough is just 4 miles away, with its half-timbered houses, handsome Georgian buildings and fine selection of individual shops, inns and restaurants in and around one of Europe’s widest high streets.
Within easy reach are the ancient sites of Silbury Hill, West Kennet Long Barrow, Avebury Stone Circle/village and several iron-age forts. On the downs are white horses, ancient routes and the country’s main area for the appearance of mysterious crop-circles. Beautiful Saversnake Forest and the Kennet and Avon Canal are just minutes away. Just a short drive to the north are the Cotswolds, to the west is beautiful Bath with its pale gold architecture, to the east is Hungerford with its many antique shops, and to the south is the cathedral city of Salisbury as well as Stonehenge. Golf available locally. Shops 4 miles.

Spacious beamed living room with gas ‘coal-effect’ fire and inglenook. Dining room with inglenook. Large, well-equipped country-style kitchen with spacious family and breakfast area, Esse electric oven, double Belfast sink and terracotta floor. Utility. Study. Shower room with toilet. First floor: Two double bedrooms, each with TV/video, one with en-suite bathroom with shower over Victorian-style bath and toilet. Two twin bedrooms, each with digital TV, one with beamed walls and ceiling. Bathroom with shower cubicle and toilet.

The picture of the exterior is not representative of how the cottage looks now. This was a lovely cottage, right by a busy road, not a real problem for us, but the cottage is tired and in need of some TLC both inside and out. It was very cold on arrival even though you are asked to pay a winter fuel allowance on arrival, a first for our group, once warmed up though it was fine. The towels, bedding and bathrooms although clean are worn and not of the quality expected. Its location is ideal for lovely walks and great shopping in Marlborough, 100 Chai Street is highly recommended for a warm welcome and good food.

Great house for family wedding. Loved it, but traffic noise from road was amazing!

This is a beautiful thatched cottage with a lovely garden. The road noise is an issue with cars speeding past most of the day. That said, it did not intrude on our enjoyment and we cite in the garden on a couple of occasions. The kitchen area is lovely and while the range was not working during our visit we managed with the electric hob and oven. We had a very enjoyable and comfortable stay.

Excellent property, and very helpful owners. Only minor detraction was it's proximity to a noisy busy road .

We had a great time, lived the house and garden. Location too.

The cottage easily accommodated all of us staying there and the family gatherings that we had. Th sitting room is very comfortable and the kitchen diner is excellent. If you have the master bedroom open then the traffic noise early in the morning can wake you. There are plenty of games and dvds to occupy children and adults. The owners of the cottage were friendly and helpful. A few things need tweaking in the cottage, but if you are looking for a large cottage to accommodate a lot of people, in a good location, with plenty of parking space, Tollgate is good.

The cottage is located on the side of a busy road and some distance from the village, which is not ideal. There were some negatives - the dishwasher was not working properly so we did all washing up by hand, and the electric tripped off four times during our weekend stay. Overall the cottage could do with some TLC. But the cottage was roomy , well laid out and nicely furnished, and suited our family get together perfectly.

Lovely character property with lots of space and communal areas that are nice to be in. We would have loved to stay longer and can see it would be lovely in warmer weather with a nice big garden to use and explore!
