English Country Cottages

Description

An ideal base for a couple wishing to explore the area with historic Battle and Hastings, Eastbourne and beaches a short drive away.

Sympathetically converted to form characterful properties, the heavily beamed cottages at Thornden Farm date back to the 16th century and occupy a truly peaceful and secluded setting amidst 1066 countryside. Within the grounds of Thornden Farm are goats, free range chickens and a small flock of sheep, and from here, there are far-reaching views to Beachy Head, the South Downs and the sea. Each cottage boasts an individual seating area in landscaped gardens.

There is a wealth of diverse attractions and activities within the surrounding area. Visit historic Battle, where one may pause for a cream tea and visit the ancient abbey or the fascinating world of Yesteryear, a fun museum of everyday items from days gone by. Hastings is a short drive away offering freshly caught fish from the beaches in the old town, the smugglers cave and many more tourist attractions. Rye, with its cobbled streets, variety of shops and inns such as the famous Mermaid Inn which is known in history as the meeting place for the notorious Hawkhurst smuggling gang, makes a truly wonderful day out. Just a short trip from Ashburnham, one can find expanses of white sand dunes and beaches at Camber, with many other beaches and cliff top walks to be discovered along the entire coast. The Victorian seaside resort of Eastbourne (15 miles), with an indoor swimming-pool, adventure park and new Sovereign Harbour complex, still retains a sense of its opulent past. Royal Tunbridge Wells and the famous Pantiles are 18 miles away. Batemans, the home of Rudyard Kipling, is 5 miles away at Burwash. There are also numerous National Trust and English Heritage sites in the locality.

Activities offered locally include trout fishing (fly only) in Ashburnham, Bewl and Darwell reservoirs. Horse riding, four golf courses plus fantastic cycling and walking. There are many festivals and shows throughout the year, including orchestral nights at Battle Abbey and the castles of Bodium and Hertsmonceaux. Guy Fawkes celebrations in East Sussex are a local tradition, with each area boasting its own Bonfire Society. Within 1½ miles there are two pubs, the ‘Ash Tree Inn’ at Brownbread Street and ‘The Swan Inn’ at Dallington each serve real ales and fine food. Whether it’s a romantic short break or a family holiday that is required, Thornden Cottages offer the perfect setting, as many people testify by returning again, and again, and again. Shop 4 miles.

We really enjoyed our stay, only a couple problems the quilt on the bed was the wrong size for the bed only a double on a kingsize bed, sleep was uncomfortable to say the least, also the shower was a bit restricted for space ....Apart from that we were very happy with our stay.

The Byre is in a lovely setting, but very remote and access either way is by high hedged single track road. The nearest pubs are accessed by this single track road and it would not be safe to walk in my opinion. The accomodation was comfortable, but basic. Many of the coments in the visitor book dating back several years had still not been addressed, but they chose during our stay to install extra lighting in the kitchen area. I'm sure seeing as it had been mentioned for several years it could have waited until we had vacated the property. The property could do with a good vacuum and dust throughout as cobwebs abound, and they do not enhance the country living experience. There is no hand over of the key, it is just left in the door, no operating instructions for the oven, no fuel for the log burner, although a quick text to the owner and this was speedily rectified. We just felt overall it was too far off the beaten track for our requirements.

    Response from:

Response on behalf of the owner: One of the biggest attractions of our holiday cottages is their rural location and the feeling of ‘getting away from it all’ but we are sorry to note that you found the location too far off the beaten track. The roads are indeed, narrow around here but again, that is due to the rural location. If you had advised us about the cleaning standard within the property, as well as the provision of logs, we could have recalled the cleaning team and dealt with the matter, as well as providing you with the logs needed for the wood burner. We do value your feedback and rest assured that we do listen and take action on comments made by our guests. Thank you for taking the time to give us your comments.

We had an absolutely lovely weekend staying at The Byre, setting was stunning and the cottage was everything we hoped for our weekend away. Definitely booking again, hopefully in November as a birthday treat, so we can make use of the lovely log burner.
