Heart of Lakeland, with panoramic views

A nature-lovers’ paradise

Wheelchair access in Tarns Cottage

Thompson Ground is a working hill farm in the heart of Lakeland, with panoramic country views. Visitors here will soon find that this wonderful area is filled with a profusion of things to see and pursuits to enjoy, from walking in the beautiful Grizedale Forest and on the Langdales, and going pony trekking, to participating in the water sports and launch trips on nearby Windermere and Coniston Water. However you choose to spend your time, any of these four cosy and comfortable cottages make an ideal holiday base to come back to. The Lake District itself hardly needs any introduction. In addition to the choice natural scenery, amongst some of England’s finest, there are also lots of interesting ‘man-made’ attractions to visit (some more publicised than others). Why not start with the picturesque village of Hawkshead, which is 1/2 mile away. Beatrix Potter’s former home, Hill Top (NT), lies near Sawrey, whilst The Wordsworth Museum in nearby Grasmere, occupies Dove Cottage, which the poet William Wordsworth made his home between 1799 and 1808. There are also many NT properties in the vicinity, from the magnificent Levens Hall to the tiny Old Bridge House at Ambleside. The cottages are attractively furnished and fully equipped, with sealed window units, a storm porch and Tarn Cottage (ref NP57) is specially designed for use by visitors with some degree of physical handicap. Each has their own furnished patio area, and all have access to a front lawn, which is the ideal venue for children and adults to socialise and play. Locally there are plenty of pubs and restaurants, any of which are perfect for spending a relaxing evening in. Stabling for 2 horses is available on request.

Ground floor: Living/dining room/kitchen. First floor: 2 bedrooms: 1 double, 1 single. Bathroom with shower over bath and toilet.

All properties: Open fire in living room included. Gas central heating, electricity, bed linen and towels included. DVD. CD. Electric cooker. Microwave. Washer/dryer. Dishwasher. Freezer. Wi-fi. Payphone (on site). Private patios and furniture. Shared lawned area to front of cottages. Barbecue. Ample parking.

The cottage is very pleasant, situated half-way up Hawkshead hill in the middle of a public footpath. Taking the footpath downhill takes you on a 20 minute walk into the village, perfect for getting groceries, and up-hill takes you towards Tarn Hows and Coniston. There are also beautiful views down towards Ambleside, which is only 5 minutes by car. The cottage has more modern decor than in some of the photos, as the levels of pink was initially a concern when I was looking at this cottage. My only real gripe with the cottage was the road junction, which when exiting, is blind in both directions. We found ourselves having to inch our way out into the road in order to see both ways which, given that to the right is a somewhat blind corner, is pretty dangerous. There really needs to be a mirror installed for visibility for both entering and leaving the farm.

Very comfortable and warm cottage. Beautiful views lots of local walks. Thoroughly enjoyed our stay. Our son got unexpected leave and the owners were kind enough to let him join us.

A comfortable cottage for three people in a location with a stunning view north. It is worth noting that a local dairy makes a daily delivery of milk etc. Ample provision of logs for the open fire but chop your own sticks; axe provided. Minor niggles; Rear window curtain is inaccessible as walls are thick and units in way; it could be moved forward. Being on a working farm animals were expected but what is the point of having cattle grids that don't work; temporary gates were in use and when the cattle were in the field they milled around making leaving and returning a problem. Leaving the farm entrance was hazardous as it was impossible to see in either direction. Visitor book indicates that the converted cottage is c15 years old and this shows in the bathroom.

It was a lovely place to stay. Great location between Windermere and Coniston. Remember to source information about the local area (e.g. Walks) as you don't get much in the welcome pack.
