Description

Retaining some original features, this period cottage offers comfort and stunning views over the magnificent garden and orchard.

This pair of garden cottages are set in the grounds of the Jacobean Manor House - Thickwood House, dating back to the 1700’s. During the centuries it grew to become one of the most prosperous farms in the area, and its present owners maintain the stunning gardens and outbuildings in keeping with the house. The cottages were sympathetically converted from a Cotswold stone byre, and retain many traditional features. Cosy and comfortable, and with views over the magnificent garden and orchard, they provide a peaceful, countryside retreat and an excellent holiday base from which to explore the surrounding countryside and picturesque villages. Nearby Castle Combe is said to be the prettiest village in England, also famous for its motor racing circuit. Lacock is another picture postcard village, well loved by film-makers for its historical streets and buildings. Lacock Abbey was used in the Harry Potter films. This AONB enjoys easy access to the Cotswolds, Salisbury Plain and the Marlborough Downs offering stunning scenery for walking and cycling, and the Georgian Spa city of Bath is within half an hour’s drive. Shops and pub 1 mile.

All on ground floor: Living/dining room with beams. Kitchen. 1 double bedroom. Bathroom with shower over bath and toilet.

Both properties: Oil central heating, electricity, bed linen and towels included. DVD. Electric cooker. Microwave. Laundry service available at cost. Large shared, lawned garden with patio and furniture. Ample parking. No smoking. No children under 12 years. NB: Deep water feature in grounds.

Couldn't use kettle smelt terrible plastic smell had to use microwave to do a hot drink. Loads of leather jacket type beetle's & spiders &webs . Lots of dirty dishes in cupboards didn't cook at all no dishwasher Very disappointing

    Response from:

Response on behalf of the Owner; We are so sorry that you did not enjoy your stay with us, and wish that you had taken the opportunity to come across the garden during your stay and tell us of your concerns. We have examined the Bosch kettle but can find nothing wrong with it, and fortunately subsequent visitors have had no problem using it. There is no room for a dishwasher in the galley kitchen, but our cleaner checks all the dishes after each visit to ensure they are clean. This is a two hundred year old property with high beams and, although we remove the cobwebs on a regular basis, inevitably in late summer some spiders will creep back. As you would have seen from our visitors’ book no one else has reported the kind of problems you have described and again we are very sorry that you obviously did not enjoy your stay.

Had a lovely weekend stay. Sweet little cottage. Set in grounds of beautiful house. Excellent base for exploring. Not to far from Bath, Castle Combe, Laycock abbey etc. Only negative for us was the bed. We are used to bigger one at home. It was very comfortable though (don't let this put you off it's just personal preference). Owners very nice people.
